Woman Allegedly Left Toddler At Smyrna Homeless Shelter

The three-year-old was left to the care of the facility's staff for five days after the mother allegedly left the shelter.

A homeless woman was arrested by Cobb Police after she allegedly abandoned her three-year-old child at a Smyrna shelter for women and children.

According to the Marietta Daily Journal, 41-year-old Keisha Bennett left her child in the care of staff at Smyrna's "The Garden," the home base of operations for the 7 Bridges to Recovery ministry for the homeless. Bennett is accused of leaving her child at the shelter on Dec. 20 and not returning until Christmas morning.

Police told the MDJ that Bennett admitted to abandoning her child at The Garden after fleeing from the facility herself. Authorities say that an unknown person delivered a note to caretakers at The Garden in handwriting asking staff to care for the child.

Bennett was arrested on Dec. 27 and charged with misdemeanor contributing to the deprivation of a minor and posted a $1,000 bond on Dec. 28.
