Update: Man charged in I-285 fatality

A woman was hit and killed after walking along the interstate when she got out of her boyfriend's car early Saturday morning.

Update 4 p.m.: The male passenger involved in the early Saturday morning accident that resulted in a woman being stuck and killed on westbound I-285, west of Cobb Parkway, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, concealing the death of another, tampering with evidence and driving under the influence.

Cobb County police have charged Michael M. Swetell, 38, who is currently being held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

Swetell and 23-year-old Yasmel Garcia-Victoria, both of Norcross, were reportedly traveling in a black 2002 Honda Civic when they stopped in the emergency lane, got out of the car and began to argue. It was during that time that police investigators say Garcia-Victoria was struck in the right travel lane by a vehicle that did not stop.

According to investigators, several vehicles struck the body and only one driver stopped to report it. Garcia-Victoria was pronounced dead at the scene.

After Garcia-Victoria was struck, Swetell reportedly drove the Honda to a Waffle House on Atlanta Road near I-285 and told an employee, who then called police. After being questioned by authorities, Swetell was charged with the crimes.
