2 School Board Members Bid Farewell

Thursday's Cobb Board of Education will be the last for Lynnda Eagle and Alison Bartlett.

The Cobb Board of Education will say goodbye to two members and hear presentations about technology pilot progams at Thursday night's business meeting.

The meeting, which includes a public comment period, begins at 7 p.m. in the board room of the Cobb County School District central office, 514 Glover St., Marietta.

It will be the final meeting for board members Lynnda Eagle and Alison Barlett, who are leaving after serving one term each.

Eagle, a Republican who represents Post 1 (Northwest Cobb), did not seek re-election and will be succeeded by retired teacher Randy Scamihorn, also a Republican.

Bartlett, a Democrat who represents Post 7 (a portion of West Cobb), was defeated by Republican Brad Wheeler, a former teacher and administrator, in November's election.

Scamihorn and Wheeler will begin their terms in January.

The pilot programs, reported on Wednesday in The Marietta Daily Journal, include students bringing their own electronic devices to school for instruction-related purposes and experiments in the "flipped classroom," in which they hear classroom lectures online at home and do homework in class.

Another presentation, according to the MDJ report, is an update of the "Bridge Bill," started in 2010 that mandates eighth-graders to develop a graduation plan before moving on to high school.

The board also will consider the following:

  • A recommendation to spend $9.8 million, mostly from SPLOST III funds, to purchase 115 replacement school buses;
  • A recommendation from Superintendent Michael Hinojosa to adopt a new board policy that would identify and assist students who do not demonstrate reading proficiency by the end of the third grade.

The board also will recognize the following groups and individuals:

  • Walton High School's state volleyball championship team;
  • NAfME 2013 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band;
  • Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (GAHPHERD) honorees;
  • Georgia Department of Education Reward Schools;
  • Clean Air Campaign PACE Award 2011-2012 Clean Air School District of the Year.
