2016 SPLOST Meetings Begin Today
The proposed sales tax would generate an estimated $750 million that would be used to fund construction projects in the county.
Cobb County residents who want to discuss the tentative project list for the proposed 2016 SPLOST will get a chance to speak their minds during a series of informal meetings which begin on July 9.
Cobb County government has posted the project list for the 2016 SPLOST, a proposed extension of the one cent sales tax which would allow for funding of capital projects that would benefit Cobb County and the cities within.
Estimates given by the county state that the six-year tax would generate $750 million in revenue, $38 million of which would be spent on county-wide projects.
Cobb's cities would also get a large chunk of the SPLOST revenue. Here is a breakdown of the projected revenue per city:
- $21,208,827 for Acworth city projects
- $6,725,280 for Austell city projects
- $31,602,891 for Kennesaw city projects
- $58,353,902 for Marietta city projects
- $14,231,720 for Powder Springs city projects
- $52,773,203 for Smyrna city projects
The first of several public information meetings to cover the 2016 SPLOST and the proposed projects will be held for District 3 residents from 7 to 9 p.m. on July 8 at the East Cobb Senior Center. A July 10 meeting for residents of District 4 will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the South Cobb Community Center.
District 2 residents get their public meeting on July 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the East Cobb Library. District 1's meeting will be held on July 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the West Cobb Senior Center.
In addition, a countywide open house for the 2016 SPLOST is planned for July 17 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Cobb County government building at 100 Cherokee Street in Marietta Square.
The first formal public hearings for the 2016 SPLOST are scheduled for July 21 at 9 a.m. and July 22 at 7 p.m. at the Cherokee Street offices.
