Calling All Red-Blooded Republicans

We're seeking dyed-in-the-wool GOP diehards to participate in "Red Georgia," a political survey Patch is conducting during this election year.

We're excited to announce "Red Georgia," the latest in a series of political surveys launched in Patch towns across the country.

And with Smyrna-Vinings being a hotbed for Republican loyalties, we know that more than a few of you would be interested in taking part.

We are looking for current and former GOP officials, activists and everyday citizens who are politically knowledgeable and involved in their communities -- people whose opinion would be considered valuable and would be trusted by their neighbors.

"Red Georgia" surveys will focus on issues that matter to Republicans in Cobb, the metro Atlanta area and Georgia issues leading up to Election 2012.

Taking part is a way for you to have a voice in the political discussion during this important election year. We promise these surveys will be short and that we won’t flood your ‘in’ box with lots of emails.

If you agree to participate, we'll e-mail you a question and your response will be mixed in with other survey respondents to help Georgia get a clearer view of an issue of importance. We'll include your name on our public roster of participants, but your answers will always be anonymous.

If you'd like to participate, contact Smyrna-Vinings Patch editor Sydney Busby: sydney.busby@patch.com. That's all you have to do, and we'll get you set up.

Thank you for your time and insight. We'll be reaching out with the first survey soon!

And if you're a Democrat, don't despair. We'll be contacting you soon with an invitation to participate in a similar survey.

What do we do if we feel that each party leaves a bad taste in our mouths? Are independents not welcome in this state?
Brian July 3, 2012 at 12:17 am
Richard Steiner: The U.S. government, by nature of how the voting system is set up, is a two-party system that currently uses polarization to control people by making them choose between the lesser of two extremes. The only solution to solve the problem of choosing between reps and dems is to reform our voting system. Wikipedia provides many alternative types of voting systems.
Otherwise, it is a futile exercise to consider one's self an independent.

Libertarians are Republicans that smoke pot.

Brian, you aren't correct. Independent candidates sometimes have enough clout to make serious inroads in an election. I suspect you will see more and more of that as political polarization increases.

RS - I'm not wrong. It's that kind of thinking and hopeless optimism that keeps our voting system messed up. We need to accept it's a broken system in order to fix it. Advocating for third parties will never have much of an effect on presidential elections, and will give false hope. In presidential elections, you'll never see an independent or third party president elected until the voting system is changed. Only local and state/congressional elections ever have that kind of thing happen. Historically, George Washington was the only president elected as an independent. That was because political parties hadn't been established yet. A third-party candidate has not won a U.S. election since 1900. And since 1990, a third-party has only gained a congressional seat two times. To make matters worse, even if an independent or third party could gain popular vote majority, the two-party electoral college could override it.

Are these the apartments that were once called "Garrison Plantation"?
Lissa K. June 15, 2013 at 09:32 pm
This is Garrison Plantation - Garrison Lakes - Lakefront Vista. I lived there when it was familyRead More owned. It went from sister to brother then sold. Changed name from Garrison Plantation (because it wasn't PC) (but no one thought about what a garrison was) to Garrison Lakes (there's only one lake) to Lakefront Vista (under new ownership.) It's a dump now. The layout and size of the apts. are great. Even the location is great. Still know some people there. But it went downhill.

I'd rather answer the question "How do you feel about Roswell Street Baptist Church?" MyRead More answer: can't stand it. This incident is just another in its long and bigoted history. During the anti gay lifestyle debacle it gave out copies of the 10 Commandments. That anti gay resolution drafted by Gordon Wysong and enacted by the Cobb Co. Commissioners cost the county an Olympic venue. Whenever I hear about that church I think of the OM who called the church's prominent members The Marietta Mafia!

Its sad, that young people who are gay and often struggle to accept themselves as they are, faceRead More such fury and rejection by a church that preaches love, compassion and forgiveness for most but not all. No wonder many young people, the vast majority of whom are or will be heterosexual find the church increasingly irrelevant in their lives with attitudes like this.
