City Council Members to Meet With Constituents

Smyrna Vinings-Patch takes a look at the week ahead with a roundup of news from Smyrna’s mayor and some of its City Council members.

Lizette Bryan, executive assistant to the mayor and council, told Smyrna-Vinings Patch Monday that while Mayor Max Bacon is planning a town hall meeting for some of south Smyrna’s business owners, a general town hall meeting has not “been planned or talked about.”

After he won election to his seventh term of office in November, .

“I’ll have a town hall meeting within 60 days of being sworn in,’’ he said. “I want more people involved; we want to hear from them. It’s not like we want to shut people out. I need all the help I can get as mayor.’’

Bacon and the Smyrna City Council were sworn in Jan. 3. 

A City Council newcomer held a meeting to discuss traffic issues in Forest Hills Thursday, Feb. 23. At the meeting, Corkey Welch, Ward 4 council member, discussed the restoration of the neighborhood’s original speed bumps and other options to slow or discourage excess traffic. Welch said he planned to speak with Scott Stokes, Smyrna’s director of public works, Monday morning and ask that the original speed bumps be reinstalled. Keith Williams, Smyrna’s city engineer, will soon solicit input from the neighborhood regarding construction of a traffic diversion to discourage cut-through traffic.

In other traffic news Andrea Blustein, Ward 2, reported that Campbell Road will soon have a new right-only turn lane at the intersection of Spring Road. She said that 80 percent of the drivers at that intersection are making right turns onto Spring Road and that the new lane may alleviate some congestion. The turn lane has been mapped out on the street’s surface and should be completed in the next week to 10 days, Blustein said.

In news from Ward 3 the Williams Park Neighborhood Association will meet Wednesday, Feb. 29 in council chambers at Smyrna City Hall at 7 p.m. The neighborhood association will meet in conjunction with the Smyrna Historical Society.

Ward 7’s Bennett Woods Neighborhood Association will also hold a meeting in council chambers. Ron Fennel, Ward 7 council member, will be at the meeting that begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28. Both neighborhood association meetings are expected to last about two hours.

Another of Smyrna’s newest city council members will hold a meet-and-greet Tuesday at the . Susan Wilkinson, Ward 5 council member, wants to hear from her constituents. Ward 5 residents are invited to come voice their comments and concerns from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
