Commissioners Award Rhyne Park Improvement Contract
The $817,000 contract is part of a $1.2 million project to renovate Smyrna's Rhyne Park.
The Cobb County Board of Commissioners has awarded a contract to a Peachtree City construction company to renovate a Smyrna park.
The Marietta Daily Journal reports that JHC Corporation was given the $817,000 contract to improve the softball fields and surrounding areas of Rhyne Park. The money comes from $1.2 million in 2011 SPLOST funds earmarked for these and other Rhyne Park improvements.
JHC will be tasked with replacing the park's old wooden retaining walls with modern concrete structures and constructing new dugouts, irrigation infrastructure, and fences for the park's two softball fields.
Senior Contract Project Manager at Cobb County Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Tom Bills told the MDJ that large projects such as the Rhyne Park renovations are often broken up into smaller elements which can be handled by outside contractors or internal workers.
Bills said some in-house projects planned for Rhyne Park included improving the existing concessions and replacing the lights for the softball fields.
Rhyne Park's softball fields, tennis courts, pavilion, and children's playground are used by about 14,000 people each year, Bills told the MDJ.
