Members of the Cumberland Community Improvement District (CID), the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT), Cobb County government, and representatives of the federal government ceremonially broke ground on a highway widening project on US 41 on Friday.

US 41, also known as Cobb Parkway, will be widened from four lanes to six lanes in the one mile stretch between Paces Mill and Akers Mills roads in a project that is expected to be completed by 2017. The Atlanta Braves expect to open their new Cumberland-area stadium in 2017, as well.

In addition to widening the highway, the $35 million project calls for the building of a raised median and a 12 foot wide multi-use trail on the west side of the road that will connect the area to the Chattahooche River.

The aim of the project is to provide more efficient transportation in the area, which is one of the busiest in the state of Georgia. With the arrival of the Braves, the area will only get more congested, and it is hoped the road widening project will kick off up to $1 billion in further transportation improvements in the immediate vicinity of the Braves' new home.

Speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony included United States Senator Johnny Isakson and Executive Vice President of the Atlanta Braves Mike Plant.
