June Jobs Report Disappointing

A night after Cobb business leaders gather to network and mingle in a festive atmosphere, Friday's U.S. government jobs report reveals there's little to celebrate.

The Labor Department's jobs report released Friday morning didn’t produce a lot of good news with unemployment rising and hiring sluggish.

President Barack Obama is expected to speak on the jobs report at 10:35 a.m.

According to the report, the economy gained only 18,000 jobs in June, less than the disappointing 25,000 jobs that were added in May

The economy reportedly needs to add about 150,000 jobs a month to merely keep pace with population growth.

June marked the weakest month since September, when the U.S economy was still losing jobs. In more disappointing news, the government also revised the job numbers downward for both April and May.

And oh yeah, the unemployment rate rose in June to 9.2% from 9.1% in May.

The sluggish economy was a popular topic Thursday night as an estimated 600 business executives from across Cobb County, including those from Smyrna and Vinings, gathered at the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Conference Center to network and build relationships in a festive atmosphere.

The Summer J.A.M. (joint association meeting) was a free event co-hosted by the Cobb County Business Association Coalition and the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. All 12 of the county’s business associations were represented and Vinings Church was one of the seven platinum sponsors. Patch will have more coverage of this event coming.
