Meet the Candidates: Ron Fennel

In our continuing coverage of the 2011 election, Smyrna-Vinings Patch provides here a profile of one of the four candidates for Smyrna city council's Ward 7.

Smyrna’s general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 and a record 19 candidates are on the ballot. In their words, candidates will be introducing themselves here at Patch. Today, we have Ward 7 city council candidate Ron Fennel, who is running against Garry Osborne, Ziad Salameh and Vic Yankouski.

Ron is a native of Brunswick, Ga., and married to Cindy Hepler Fennel of Cobb County. They have two wonderful sons, Hunter (5) and Walker (4), who attend preschool at Smyrna First United Methodist Church. They live in the Vinings Estates neighborhood and attend Cindy’s home church, First United Methodist Church of Marietta. Cindy is a full-time mom and Ron works as an association management executive and government relations consultant, primarily for the state’s hospitality industry.

Ron has always been involved in civic and community affairs and activities, including: President, Vinings Estates Community Association; Member, Georgia and Cobb Chambers of Commerce, Alumnus, Cobb Honorary Commanders Association; 16-year Board member with two years as Chairman of Atlanta’s Table of the Atlanta Community Food Bank; Executive Director, Cobb Hotel Council; Chairman, Atlanta Fire Foundation; Chairman, TEAM Georgia; Past Chair, Glynn Clean & Beautiful; Elected to two terms as a member, Georgia House of Representatives (1988-1993).

For residents in the south part of Ward 7, Fennel will pursue noise abatement at rail crossings and will aggressively pursue a Smyrna ZIP code for all Smyrna residents. Ron will also work with residents to assure specific and proper input to the Cobb County School Board as they prepare to make redistricting decisions for Smyrna school children.

Why am I running for Smyrna City Council? Because I feel I can contribute something meaningful to my city and make a difference on the issues that are key to families like mine. Here in Smyrna, I joined my neighborhood HOA Board because I saw things that needed to be done. I am not afraid to take on a challenge or to take a stand on something I believe in. Just ask the residents of Vinings Estates!

The job of a City Councilman is to ensure sound fiscal decision-making, make sure the grass is cut, the trash is picked up, and the streets are safe, clean and free of potholes as much as possible through town. Basic services and sometimes seemingly mundane issues are crucial at this level. I will always be available to listen and help wherever possible.

As your Ward 7 Councilman, I will focus on ensuring our government makes solid decisions, based on facts and good common sense. Prudent decision-making with regard to budgetary restraints, and long-range planning are key to ensuring the future success of Smyrna for our children.

I want Smyrna to enjoy the positive benefits of our tremendous growth over the past twenty years and to continue that strong leadership as we work to make Smyrna better. Whether it is parks, community events, improved public safety, or a change in property zoning, I am ready to listen and make sure that YOU are heard. Together, we can ensure Smyrna remains among the most desirable living communities in our metro region.

"Ron works as a government relations consultant" That's an interesting way to put it. My understanding is that he's a lobbyist. http://www.georgia-capitol.com/
Rio October 12, 2011 at 10:52 pm
I know very little about this candidate but he was very impressive at the last Council Meeting. He definitely looks like a strong candidate. This isn't my Ward but still wanted to put my 2 cents in.
Randy Smyrna realist October 13, 2011 at 12:02 pm
Lol. When he is under oath he calls himself a lobbyist when he is not under oath he/mdj etc.... calls himself a consultant ;) we need more of these on the council ;)
Chaz Holbrook October 13, 2011 at 12:27 pm
He was a little too chummy with the mayor at that council meeting. We need councilmen who will act independently of the mayor. (The title consultant can be used to hide a multitude of sins.)
Randy Smyrna realist October 13, 2011 at 12:32 pm
Chaz: when is he telling truth? Is it when he is under oath or is it when he is submitting his info to the patch, mdj and others? If I were the local media I would check with election board regarding candidates info. If the local media does not check the facts it is promoting untruth.

Hello all, as has been mentioned a few times on this site, Mr. Fennel is indeed a lobbyist, specifically the CEO of lobbying firm Georgia Capital Partners. We have spoken to the candidate about this and Patch will soon be publishing a story about such. Thanks.
Randy Smyrna realist October 13, 2011 at 02:19 pm
Thank you Hunt. I wish mdj had same standards as you.

If you read the definitions of "lobbyist" and "consultant" in any of the four dictionaries in which I looked, the two words mean very different things. I cannot imagine voting for a lobbyist to represent my ward on the City Council. And, to the person who is splitting hairs over the GA law regarding signs on public property, if a car is parked on public property and there are signs on the car, then the signs are on public property. Someone brought up "intent." Under the law, both the intent of the law and the intent of the person accused of violating the law are considered. If a district attorney investigates and decides that a person accidentally hit someone with a car, (s)he is going to file different charges than would be filed if the investigation indicates that a person intentionally hit someone with a car. Mr. Fennell is a lobbyist, regardless of what he might call himself on a given occasion

Everyone has heard about lobbyists and their "pay to play" schemes that swindle the taxpayer, but most have done nothing to confront the abuse - Ron Fennel has. Don't assume that everyone involved in government has given up and given in. Get the facts.
Ron worked on Governor Zell Miller's staff, and he served in the Georgia State Legislature. He knows that policymakers, in our capitol and here in Smyrna, can't make good decisions without turning to sources outside government for researched arguments on all sides of an issue. He knows the system can be corrupted by special interests because he saw the abuses firsthand. Ron didn't give up and give in. He cleaned up and cleared out the "consultants" who relied on gifts and graft. Georgia State Congressman Ron Fennell co-authored the Ethics in Government Act of 1992. Look it up! Ron's current business, Georgia Capitol Associates, LLC (www.georgia-capitol.com), follows theses principles everyday. Ron doesn't take lawmakers on hunting trips, he doesn't pick up the check in fancy restaurants and he doesn't stay in business without absolute credibility with his clients and his government contacts. Ron Fennel knows how to create synergy between business and government without sacrificing transparency and accountability. He does it every day for his clients. I know Ron Fennel personally. Let Ron Fennel put his integrity and expertise to work here in Smyrna. Elect Ron Fennel to Smyrna City Council for Ward 7.

Mr. Archbold, perhaps I am 'tainted' by the same view against which I caution others, but your comment seems to suggest something negative about the industry of lobbying. As with virtually every profession, from medicine to car sales to teaching, there are good and bad people in what might otherwise be a useful, honorable and legal line of work. Certainly our ruling class in Washington has done plenty to give the term lobbying a bad name. The simple fact there is that if those politicians were not for sale, the lobbying industry would have much less influence...but I digress.
The above notwithstanding, I believe you have a factual error in your related post. Candidate Fennel's company is: Georgia Capitol Associates, LLC (www.georgia-capitol.com). I provided the link in case anyone is interested in learning more about what his company actually does.
Hunt Archbold (Editor) October 17, 2011 at 05:23 pm
M.M.: I’m sorry if my comment misled you in thinking I have an overall negative viewpoint about the lobbying industry. That was not its intent and your points were well taken. I also apologize for not having the story posted on Mr. Fennel as it almost, but not completely finished. As I understand, Mr. Fennel’s practice overall is concentrated in the hospitality industry. "I started at the local McDonalds," said Fennel of the first step in what he called decades in the hospitality industry. "I advocate for people who make a living making meals, making beds, driving cabs, people who work for a living. I have no compunction about helping to advocate for creating jobs."
In Smyrna, he would not be called upon to make a decision on the hotel/motel tax. That's set by Cobb County. And thanks for the correction and link. Here’s one to Mr. Fennel’s bio: http://www.georgia-capitol.com/#!ron-d.-fennel
Marky Mark October 17, 2011 at 07:12 pm
Thank you Mr. Archbold. I am confident candidate Fennel would gladly explain to anyone with interest the nature of his work. At the risk of misstating, the best way I can make a bullet point for it is to say he fills a void that often exists when government and private sector businesses attempt to work together. Government often does not fully understand private business issues and private businesses often do not understand how to navigate government bureaucracies. Mr. Fennel has learned to bring the two sides together (i.e., he speaks both languages). The vision of lobbyists buying expensive dinners, hosting lavish parties and provided luxurious trips to elected representatives, which seemingly is very common in Washington DC, is quite understandable, and in fact warranted at many levels. The term 'lobbyist', with all of its imagery and negative connotations, is simply too broad of a term to be applied to Mr. Fennel's work. I am hopeful Mr. Fennel can utilize his same skills in promoting and advocating on behalf of Smyrna. This economy will one day begin to recover and flourish. I want Smyrna to be fully prepared to capitalize when that begins.
Thanks again...MM

Being a Lobbyist is not necessarily a bad profession, but a career Democrat politico is not what Smyrna needs. His record is all public: Young Democrats in 1980s, Democrat state Rep. in the late early 90's, and his firm represents Democrat, pro-union, and pro-illegal alien interests like American Subcontractors Association, Atlanta Community Food Bank, Atlanta Electrical Contractors Association, Atlanta Fire Foundation, Atlanta Taxicab Drivers Association, Atlanta Taxicab Owners Association, Cobb Hotel Council, Georgia Hotel & Lodging Association, etc.

Someone is vandalizing Vic Y's large wooden campaign signs. Signs in various locations have been sprayed over with orange paint.
Maxx October 27, 2011 at 05:37 pm
Im glad that Lokijon brought to attention Fennel's heavily Democratic background. Does Smyrna really need someone with a democratic agenda? As far as noise sanctions are concerned, how is Smyrna to promote business growth if our city council members are going to "abate" business expansion. Restrictions increase government spending, and reduce business activity. On both local and national levels, increased government spending and reduced business activity will not ever be a remedy to financial hardship. We do not need another democrat in any government office, local or federal, who does not have a clear understanding of fiscal policy and will continue to increase budget deficits with government spending.
Rio October 27, 2011 at 06:35 pm
City elections are non-partisan; i.e. candidates do not run as members of a particular political party, and their individual party affiliations are not relevant to their positions in the Smyrna City Government.
Maxx October 28, 2011 at 04:01 pm
Regardless, his political party affiliations will effect his ability to make effective decisions. And democrat or not, he isn't being very open and honest about his profession and I'm glad to see that was brought to attention.

Why is this article open for comments and Yankouski's is closed?

Ron Fennel being a lobbyist makes me very concerned about his ability to be 'objective' in any of the requirements for the Council position in Ward 7. I am extremely disappointed in the current Council and Mayor, particularly with the Glock vote. I think the vote would have been very different if the members of the Council owned homes backing up to the area in question. It was very clear what the community wanted and the Council chose to ignore that demand. I am very pleased that there are some Council members who have decided not to run again, including Pete Wood, but am disappointed that some members are running unopposed. We need new, objective votes on the Smyrna Council. The past year with Council decisions and the school ongoing issues, including rezoning, have made us seriously consider moving, which is sad since we've been in Smyrna for more than 10 years.

Are these the apartments that were once called "Garrison Plantation"?
Lissa K. June 15, 2013 at 09:32 pm
This is Garrison Plantation - Garrison Lakes - Lakefront Vista. I lived there when it was familyRead More owned. It went from sister to brother then sold. Changed name from Garrison Plantation (because it wasn't PC) (but no one thought about what a garrison was) to Garrison Lakes (there's only one lake) to Lakefront Vista (under new ownership.) It's a dump now. The layout and size of the apts. are great. Even the location is great. Still know some people there. But it went downhill.
MA Evans June 3, 2013 at 09:20 pm
I'd rather answer the question "How do you feel about Roswell Street Baptist Church?" MyRead More answer: can't stand it. This incident is just another in its long and bigoted history. During the anti gay lifestyle debacle it gave out copies of the 10 Commandments. That anti gay resolution drafted by Gordon Wysong and enacted by the Cobb Co. Commissioners cost the county an Olympic venue. Whenever I hear about that church I think of the OM who called the church's prominent members The Marietta Mafia!
Jim Lyon June 4, 2013 at 01:20 am
Its sad, that young people who are gay and often struggle to accept themselves as they are, faceRead More such fury and rejection by a church that preaches love, compassion and forgiveness for most but not all. No wonder many young people, the vast majority of whom are or will be heterosexual find the church increasingly irrelevant in their lives with attitudes like this.
