More GDOT Work On I-75 This Weekend

Transportation notebook includes Cobb Commissioners accepting $1.36 million competitive-bid grant from the Federal Transit Administration this week.

Another weekend approaches and with it comes more work along I-75 by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Bridge joint work at the Chattahoochee River and guardrail work throughout the corridor in both directions will continue, but this weekend will also see crews paving several ramps.

From 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, GDOT maintenance crews will close the ramp from I-75 southbound to I-285 eastbound for bridge joint repairs.

In addition, on I-75 the two right lanes will be closed northbound from Mt. Paran Road to Cumberland Boulevard, while weekend work will result in a moving right lane closure in both directions between Cumberland Blvd (Exit 258) and Techwood/16th St./14th St. (Exit 250).

And due to the resurfacing, on and off ramps southbound at Cumberland Blvd., Mt. Paran Rd., West Paces Ferry Rd., and Howell Mill Rd./Northside Drive, along with the northbound ramp at Cumberland Rd., will be closed at various times during the weekend.

“With ramp and lane closures this weekend, we are asking motorists to please be alert as they travel through the work zones,” said DOT District Construction Engineer Lee Upkins.

The $17.5 million project, which is scheduled for completion in August, includes 8.7 miles of resurfacing northbound and southbound on I-75 from the Brookwood split to I-285 as well as new guardrail and bridge joint repairs on various bridges.

  • In other transportation news, Cobb County Commissioners approved this week to accept a $1.36 million competitive-bid grant from the Federal Transit Administration that would permit the county to explore transit options in the northwest corridor of the county.

The study would focus on transit development options from Acworth to the MARTA Arts Center Station in midtown Atlanta. The grant, which was awarded to the county in December, requires a local match of $340,000. The county will put up half the amount, with the rest coming from Smyrna, Acworth, Kennesaw, the counties two improvement districts and other effected groups.

  • A study by the Metro Atlanta Regional Commuter Survey has found that the percentage of commuters driving to work alone has gone down in the past three years.

The study was conducted on behalf of GDOT and found that Atlantans are turning to commute alternatives such as teleworking, which has overtaken carpooling as the most popular primary commute alternative in metro Atlanta.

According to the study, more than one in four people in the region (27 percent) teleworks at least occasionally – an increase of 35 percent since 2007.
