New "Enterprise Zone" Established in Smyrna

Qualifying businesses or developments can apply for waivers of ad valorem taxes or reduced local fees.

The City of Smyrna and Cobb County are working together to provide incentives for businesses to hire new employees within city limits.

The Marietta Daily Journal reports that the Smyrna City Council approved the creation of the Smyrna-Osborne enterprise zone during its Monday evening meeting.

The zone encompasses parts of unincorporated Cobb County and areas inside Smyrna city limits, and will reward new and existing businesses that contribute to economic growth with tax breaks.

Businesses inside the zone that qualify for incentives must create at least five new jobs, a Smyrna official told the MDJ. Developers looking for incentives must invest at least five times the value of the subject property to qualify.

If the business or development qualifies for incentives, the city or county (depending on where the business or development is located) will either grant an exemption on ad valorem property taxes or reduce local fees.

The Smyrna-Osborne enterprise zone was legally established by the city council vote Monday, but may take a few more days to formally activate.
