New Kroger, Campbell Road Bridge Slated to Open Next Week

A look at the progress of construction projects across Smyrna.

The countdown continues for the new Kroger store to open next week at . The 153,000-square-foot redevelopment project at the corner of South Cobb Drive and Concord Road will be anchored by a 93,000-square-foot Kroger Marketplace.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for Wednesday, Jan. 25 for the new store and the new Kroger Fuel Center.

Across the street, Kroger manager Daniel Thurmond and his employees are busy moving out of the 28-year-old, 42,000 square-foot store and making the move to the larger store, which is expected to bring about 100 new jobs to the city.

On Monday, Jan. 23 the new traffic signal on South Cobb Drive in front of the Four Corners development will be in operation.

As far as other local projects, officials say the South Cobb Drive Improvement project is about 90 percent complete. All driveway entrances to the Crossings Shopping Center are now complete with asphalt topping. The Concord Square Shopping Center alignment is complete and asphalt binder layer is in place. Concrete islands are scheduled to be formed and poured next week at both shopping center entrances. The remainder of sidewalk/trail connections are scheduled to be completed this week.

The Atlanta Road Trail project remains at 80 percent complete due to signal and pedestrian crossing work. The signal and pedestrian crossing work is about 25 percent complete and landscaping is about 60 percent complete. The contractor has indicated a delay in the material for the signal work.

Campbell Road Bridge project is about 80 percent complete. The pouring of the parapet walls on both sides of the bridge has been completed. The sidewalk across the bridge on the southeast side has been formed and is to be poured this week. The reinforcing steel is in place for the concrete approach slab on the northeast side of the bridge. The contractor still anticipates the opening of Campbell Road on January 27.

And finally the Atlanta Road Streetscape LCI project started this week. The contractor is currently working between Fleming Street and Hill Street.
