New Smyrna Kroger Opening Pushed Back a Week

The 96,000 square-foot Kroger Marketplace will open in late January; plus an update on several construction projects ongoing in the Jonquil City.

Smyrna-Patch learned this week that the grand opening of the Kroger at has been pushed back a week until Jan. 25, 2012.

Currently being developed by Illinois-based Tri-Land Properties, Inc., the 153,000-square-foot redevelopment project at the corner of South Cobb Drive and Concord Road will be anchored by a 96,000 square-foot Kroger Marketplace.

It is hoped that the fuel center at The Crossings development project will open about a week or two before the Kroger. Upon completion of the redevelopment, The Crossings at Four Corners will reach 230,000 square feet.

With this past week's good weather, solid progress was made on a quartet of Smyrna projects currently ongoing. The South Cobb Drive improvement project is now about 75 percent complete. The improvements include, but are not limited to, the installation of a concrete multi-use trail, traffic signals, asphalt paving and striping, sanitary piping, storm sewer piping and water lines. Rock was blasted this past week in order to complete the storm drain installation in the main entrance to The Crossings center. All water main work for the project is now complete.

The footings for the traffic signal poles were poured this past week. Sidewalk/trail for the project is about 70 percent complete. This coming week paving is scheduled for South Cobb Dr. between Concord Road and Church Street.

All but the two outside lanes will be paved. Construction for the realignment of the Concord Square shopping center is to begin this week, too. Once both shopping center entrances are complete, the two outside lanes of South Cobb Dr. will be repaved.

The Atlanta Road Multi-use Trail project, which extends from Concord Road to Ridge Road, is now about 70 percent complete. Trail construction is about 90 percent complete; signal and pedestrian crossing signal work is about 10 percent complete; and landscaping for the project is about 20 percent complete. This trail is a component of the city’s and county’s master trail plan.

The Spring Road Trail project's phase 2 is about 5 percent complete as the clearing and grubbing has been completed. The contractor will now work on the installation of a retaining wall for this project. The trail, a project that was funded by the 2005 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, will join the trail that currently extends from Village Parkway to Cumberland.

The Campbell Road Bridge project is about 65 percent complete. The project, approved in the 2005 SPLOST, has involved the replacement of the existing bridge on Campbell Road over the CSX railroad. The new bridge will accommodate sidewalks for pedestrian traffic.

All the reinforcing steel is now in place for the bridge deck, which is scheduled to be poured on Wednesday. The water main crossing attached to underside of the bridge is now complete, with final connection to the existing water main on each side of the bridge scheduled next week.
