Rep. Phil Gingrey Announces Senate Bid

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, of Marietta, says he is running for the open Senate seat, created by Saxby Chambliss's upcoming retirement.

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Marietta) announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate Wednesday in Augusta.

Gingrey is the second Republican congressman from Georgia to enter the race for the open seat created by Sen. Saxby Chambliss's upcoming retirement. last month.

Reps. Tom Price of Roswell and Jack Kingston of Savannah, as well as Democratic Rep. John Barrow, are also considering bids for the seat, which Chambliss will vacate after next year, The National Journal and SeattlePi.com report.

In his remarks, Gingrey promised to trim the federal debt, repeal President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, fight a citizenship path for illegal immigrants and continue his opposition to abortion rights, according to The Associated Press.

The 70-year-old obstetrician-gynecologist has been a resident of Marietta for the past four decades, according to The Augusta Chronicle. Gingrey served two terms in the Georgia state senate and then moved to Congress, where he represents the 11th District.
