Smyrna City Council Meets Tonight

Here's your roundup of all the things you need to know today in Smyrna-Vinings.

It’s Monday, so that means another Smyrna City Council meeting is set for tonight at 7:30 at City Hall. See the somewhat light agenda here and the public is invited to attend.

But you don’t have to miss a thing even if you decide not to. Charter Communications Public Access Channel 19 carries each meeting live and usually the replay will air the following Monday at 7 p.m. See the TV23 section at www.cobbcounty.org for a complete rebroadcast schedule.

  • The beautiful weekend weather should continue at least through midday today with a high around 81 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, but then things will begin to turn to ugly. The wind will pick up, gusting to 30 mph, and there's a chance of a storm after 2 p.m. After 8, the National Weather Service says, severe thunderstorms are a certainty, with strong winds and rain totals of 1 to 2 inches overnight.
  • Β Cobb County public schools, along with most other school systems in the area, are on spring break this week. That means no school buses driving around, and commuting should be more relaxed because lots of people are out of town.
  • Cobb County officials this week plan to submit applications so the county can become IMAGE certified, which means the county adheres to strict federal standards in regards to its hiring process. County commissioners approved the move earlier this month to become part of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement program, also known as IMAGE.

The program would require the county to enroll in E-Verify and the Social Security Number Verification Service, follow IMAGE's best hiring practices and undergo an I-9 audit conducted by IMAGE. The program is designed to ensure that all employees working with the county are legally eligible to do so.
