Smyrna City Council Meets Tonight

Some agenda items include an annexation and the possible use of eminent domain to acquire property for Concord Road improvements.

Smyrna City Council meets Monday at 7:30 p.m. and judging by the agenda, . There are four items under land issues, zonings and annexations including the annexation of roughly half an acre of property from Cobb County into Ward 3 and a public hearing for the rezoning of two land lots on Medlin Street in Ward 4. 

Under formal business, the Council will vote whether to acquire property at 955 Concord Road through any lawful means including eminent domain. that this property was the only remaining lot the north side of the street that the city needs to acquire before it can begin making improvements to the corridor.

Ward 5 Councilman Charles "Corkey" Welch said that the city is considering eminent domain as an option for acquiring the property and that it needs to take this action now as the eminent domain process can take up to six months to complete.

"Croy Engineering is doing all the negotiating with the property owners out there, but I think it’s come to the point where we have to at least have the right to the process of eminent domain," he said. "If they can’t reach an agreement in the very near future, we’ll be holding up this whole project for one lot."

There are quite a few items listed on the consent agenda as well. Included for the Council’s approval is the city’s participation in the 2012 Cobb County Comprehensive Transportation Update for the amount of $18, 628.34, a contract for arborist services and the award of a contract for mini-excavators.

The consent agenda also includes the award of a contract in the amount of $153,025 to KM Davis Contracting to replace the South Cobb Drive water main between Bank Street and Powder Springs Street.

Council will also vote whether to approve the closure of one lane on Spring Road as part of the construction of the Spring Road pedestrian bridge. If approved, one of Spring Road’s westbound lanes between Jonquil Drive and Atlanta Road would be closed beginning Saturday, May 5 at 9 a.m. until Sunday, May 6 at midnight.

On top of a long list of agenda items it’s the third Monday of the month, which means city staff will have updates during committee reports.
