Smyrna Looks to Sell "Civil War Hospital" Home

The City of Smyrna bought the house in 2004 to save it from destruction, but plans to sell it have not materialized yet.

Nine years after the City of Smyrna paid $145,000 to save a home that was thought to be a Civil War hospital, the search for a buyer of the historic home continues.

The Hooper-Turner House is currently valued at $116,830 by city-data.com and is on the market for $159,000, according to a 2010 adaptive reuse feasibility study.

Unfortunately, buyers may be scared off because no historical documentation has ever been found that corroborates the story that the home served as a hospital during the Civil War.

Although the Hooper-Turner Home may not have been a hospital during the War Between the States, its construction has been dated to the 1850s by a team from Georgia State University.

Smyrna city officials told the Marietta Daily Journal that they intended to quickly sell the home after saving it from the bulldozer, but the housing market crashed and the city has yet to get back the money it spent on buying the property.
