Smyrna Qualifying Day 2 Update

The number of Jonquil City candidates running for office in November has reached double figures.

Qualifying for Smyrna’s 2011 election continues and as of late Tuesday morning, the updated list of candidates includes two running for mayor and several new faces seeking council seats.

Donna Short-Woodham and Alex Backry are both running for mayor. Backry unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 2007. 

Incumbent Mayor Max Bacon intends to run for an eighth term, but has yet to officially qualify at this writing.

The competition is heating up in Wards 4, 5 and 7. Charles “Corkey” Welch qualified to run for the Ward 4 city council seat against incumbent Mike McNabb. McNabb said . 

Monday, for the open Ward 5 council seat and today Mike Hyde officially qualified as his competition. Hyde that he would run for the position during citizen input at the Aug. 1, city council meeting.

The competition grows as two candidates have officially qualified for the Ward 7 council seat that will be after 20 years in office. Ziad Salameh official Monday. Later that afternoon, Vick Yankouski qualified to run against him.

Monday for the seat that will be vacated by Ron Newcomb, Ward 2. So far, Blustein is running unopposed.

Teri Anulewicz, council member Ward 3, and Melleny Pritchett, council member Ward 1, have both placed bids for reelection. Pritchett has served as Ward 1 council member since she was elected in a special election in 2001. Anulewicz is completing her first term. So far both council members are running uncontested.

In the 2007 election, four of the seven council members ran unopposed, including Pritchett and Mayor Pro-Tem Wade Lnenicka.

Smyrna-Vinings Patch will continue to provide coverage of the 2011 election qualifying period that continues until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011.
