Smyrna's Britton Takes Reins as Cobb Chamber Chairman

Good morning Smyrna-Vinings and welcome to a new work/school week. Weather wise, it should be splendid the early portion of the week with plenty of sun and highs in the low to mid 60s on Monday and Tuesday.

It will be chilly at night with temps in the upper 20s and mid 30s. Daytime temps should reach into the 60s all week, but the chance of rain increases by Wednesday with the best possibility on Thursday, which is Groundhog Day.

There’s no Smyrna Mayor and City Council meeting scheduled this evening, as the Jonquil City’s elected officials will go three weeks between council meetings, with the next one set for Feb. 6 at City Hall.

Several Smyrna officials were in attendance for the Cobb Chamber’s 70th Annual Dinner at the Cobb Galleria on Saturday night. There they witnessed Smyrna resident Tony Britton, 56, take the reins as the 2012 Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce.

A senior vice president and community banking manager of Community & Southern Bank, Britton said in this story from The Marietta Daily Journal that his “top goals for the Cobb Chamber in 2012 will be to expand economic development in the county and to implement the strategies outlined in the Cobb Chamber’s recent Cobb’s Competitive EDGE economic development plan.''

While there is no Smyrna council meeting tonight, the Interstate North Toastmasters will conduct their weekly meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. at 3100 Cumberland Boulevard. See here for more information.

Monday is also the 10th legislative day of the 2012 session of the Georgia General Assembly. If you have not done so already, Sen. Doug Stoner (D-Smyrna) asks that you please take a few moments to complete a short online survey on the issues that will be addressed.

On Tuesday, the Smyrna Rotary Club holds its weekly lunch meeting at 12:15 p.m., at the , 200 Village Green Circle. The scheduled speaker is Jim Blair, International Project Manager in Global Commerce Division, Georgia Department of Economic Development. Lunch is $15. Non-members must RSVP before the meeting. Also Tuesday, the Smyrna Golden K Kiwanis Club will hold its weekly meeting at the , 844 Church Street. The group meets from 9:30 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday to coordinate projects, listen to speakers, and share fellowship. All are welcome.

On Wednesday, it’s “Sponsor Appreciation Day” at the Rotary Club of Vinings. The club meets at noon at The Vinings Club, Overlook III, 2859 Paces Ferry Road

Also Wednesday, the Kiwanis Club of Smyrna will hold its weekly meeting at the . This is a spirited group of men and women, dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Smyrna community. The meeting is from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. and call 770-438-6961 for more info.

On Thursday, Sen. Stoner will hold a town hall meeting in the Media Center of Morris Brandon Elementary in Buckhead. The 6:30 p.m. meeting will take place at 2741 Howell Mill Rd. and Sen. Stoner intends to lead a discussion of current legislative events.

Stoner has recently authored legislation that would create a tax credit of up to $3,500 for companies that hire post-9/11 veterans who have been unemployed for more than six months. Companies will be able to realize this tax credit in the year in which they hire the unemployed veteran and credit against their payroll tax liability.

Friday, the Smyrna Optimist Club will meet at 7 a.m. at the American Legion Post 160. The Optimist Club of Smyrna is an affiliate of Optimist International and incorporated in the State of Georgia as a nonprofit service club. Hundreds of youth in Smyrna are helped by the Optimist Club's projects and programs.

On Saturday, “Starting Garden Plants from Seeds” by Master Gardener Electa Keil will be conducted from 10 - 11:30 a.m. at Brawner Hall. This class is open to the public, but space is limited and Community Garden plot holders will be given preference. Learn more about KSB and the Community Garden here.

Speaking of Brawner Hall, there will be an Open House/Showcase of Brawner Hall and the Taylor-Brawner House on Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Need meeting space for special events and/or business meetings? And looking ahead to next week, Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee is the scheduled featured speaker at the Vinings Business Association’s First Tuesday Luncheon on Feb. 7. It begins at 11:30 a.m. at .

Two days later on Feb. 9, District 2 Commissioner Bob Ott will conduct a town hall meeting at the beginning at 7 p.m.
