Retired state Rep. Bill Atkins of Smyrna will have the Windy Hill Road bridge over I-75 named after him during an Oct. 17 ceremony.

The Cobb Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual softball game last week as the Chamber Chargers battled the Government Gorillas at Smyrna’s Tolleson Park.

The game series was the idea of former state Rep. Ken Nix and the Chamber Executive Director Phil Sanders back in 1975. Smyrna resident Nix has been at the helm of the Government Gorillas for 36 consecutive years.

He and Rob Garcia, Bank of North Georgia, each handpicked a team of Cobb business leaders and elected officials to battle it out over seven innings. Garcia’s sacrifice fly scored The Marietta Daily Journal’s Otis Brumby, Jr., with the winning run as the Chamber Chargers eked out a 13-12 win.
