SPLOST Projects to Improve Cobb Transportation

The four-year 1 percent sales tax will be collected until December 2015 and must be spent on voter approved projects.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners recently approved several items funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. These actions included:

  • Approved contracts for construction of sidewalks along Little Willeo Road from Johnson Ferry Road to Timber Ridge Road and a sidewalk along Casteel Road from Dallas Highway to Sunset Ridge. The state will fund 80 percent of the construction costs while the county will be responsible 20 percent using special local option sales tax dollars. These projects are scheduled to be complete 180 days from a notice to proceed.
  • Approved paying the cost of relocating Georgia Power Company facilities from Queen Mill Road because of improvements along the roadway. These changes include realignment of multiple curves as well as installation of sidewalk, curb and gutters and two retaining walls. The project spans Queen Mill Road from Veterans Memorial Highway to Mableton Parkway. Cost of the utility facility relocation will cost up to $371,191.
  • Approved the adding of work stations consoles, monitors, computer and office equipment for the county’s Regional Transportation Management Center, which provides centralized management of traffic signal systems and incidents. The cost of the equipment is priced at $71,321.

County staff and Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood also provided commissioners with an update on collections and expenditures from the current SPLOST. This four-year 1 percent sales tax will be collected until December 2015 and must be spent on voter approved projects. Each quarter the county commission receives an update on collections and expenditures. Click here to watch the presentation.

This ugly SPLOST IS always raising its ugly head when it should of been dead a long time ago.

I just wish they'd finish the SPLOST projects in Smyrna. They did the streetscape on the Northern part of Atlanta Rd but then stopped. What are they waiting on for Concord Rd and the lower part of Atlanta Rd?

They use SPLOST to cover up their play money as any politician does!

Brian mostly likely they wont till new SPLOST is voted on and continue their addiction to taxes and additional revenue

Brian where have you been while certain people have been trying to expose the Concord Road (Bacon Boulevard) as a slush fund? The Concord Road Improvements was a $9.2 million dollar project Smyrnans voted for in 2005. That money was misspent and is long gone. $750 thousand just for the small car wash next to the Ace Hardware store. The city changed the plan without consent of the taxpayers. They decided instead of actually doing improvements they would strip that roadway of any businesses. They have accomplished that throughout Smyrna. We have more empty lots and vacant developments than any other surrounding city (or county for that matter). But don't worry there was the 2011 SPLOST to clean up with. They simply added the exact same project into the 2011 SPLOST for $11 million more. Eight years later all of Smyrna suffers from dishonest government.

Proof. Show me detailed accounting sheets showing the money disappearing. It looks full well like the project is underway, just not being managed very well and also delayed by ROW acquisitions not going smoothly and needing votes on eminent domain. But delays doesn't liquidate cash. And how does $750k (a decent price to clear out a business that size) account for over three million dollars of road work and trails? Show me where you actually think the money went. It sounds to me like there is still plenty left. Basically, show me the balance sheet and where you get your numbers from, or make your own if you think you have enough money to create a balance sheet. Otherwise, it's just speculation. I don't listen to speculation.

Did you notice a Windy Hill median and boulevard concept on the SPLOST project list? :-) Good Did you see the request to state to make a 6-lane divided highway on S. Cobb Dr? Bad. (We should aim for medians and extra turning lanes in congested areas, not a continuous 6-lane highway to add congestion) Btw, changing Queen Mill Rd seems kind of sad because it was so beautiful. Big yards, country Rd. It seems like a huge waste of money expanding that Rd, versus just leaving it rustic and charming. Discovery Pl is right nearby.

Brian if you are interested in answers as you say you are you can contact Ms. Kirkendoll at mkirkendoll22@gmail.com. She would be more than happy to show you the SPLOST check registry and other numbers. Put your money where your mouth is. She'll be waiting for your email. You can't get the full story on Patch because she has been banned from commenting. .
electric123 February 07, 2013 at 06:18 AM
Whom is this Ms. Kirkendoll? If I might ask a opponent or proponent for SPLOST?
Neal Dow February 07, 2013 at 08:08 PM
In case you aren't aware Ms. Kirkendoll has been speaking out against SPLOST waste, fraud and abuse in Cobb County and Smyrna since the 2005 SPLOST. Using FOIA she has gotten all of the financial information on SPLOST. It's the reason she has been banned from Patch. Too much information is frowned upon. Please feel free to contact her at the above email address.

If she (or anyone) has been banned the reason is because she engages in personal attacks and name calling on everyone that disagrees with her rather than speaking to the principles involved. I am sure that if she or anyone desists from doing that she would be welcomed back.

Richard is exactly right. I admire those who question government...but if you claim that EVERYTHING the govt does is wrong and crooked you are just crying wolf and will cease to be taken seriously.
