Smyrna Construction Projects Moving Along

The City's public works director gives updates on numerous road construction projects, as well as the Hickory Lake demolition.

Status updates were given for numerous construction projects around the city during this week’s Smyrna city council meeting. Public Works Director Scott Stokes addressed the council with reports on five different projects in different stages of completion — including the Campbell Road Bridge, Hickory Lake demolition and South Cobb Drive improvements, among others.

Stokes said that while he would like to see construction move along quicker on the , the project is about 15-percent complete by his estimation. He also gave an estimated completion time of January of next year when asked by Councilman Mike McNabb.

“Its moving a little slow to me but they are on the other side of the road now,” Stokes said.

Another project on minds of many Smyrna citizens is the demolition of the old . Stokes said that the abatement process is 61-percent complete, while the demolition process is 41-percent done.

Fourteen of the 92 buildings at the complex, Stokes explained, are now on the ground and he expects the demolition to be complete by February 2012.

“When I say demolition, Im talking debris removal, too.”

One project that Stokes said he expects to be done by the end of this year is the , which extends from Concord Road to Ridge Road. This trail is a component of the City’s and County’s master trail plan.

While he said that it is only 10-percent done at this point, he expects that it could be completed by the end of November or December at the latest. Ultimately, he explained that the project’s completion will largely depend on the weather in the coming months, as well as the contractor.

Other projects of note that Stokes gave updates on were the sidewalk improvements happening in front of The Crossings at Four Corners at South Cobb Drive, as well as the sidewalk and curb project going on at Gann Road between Reed Road and Brentwood Drive.

The South Cobb Drive improvements, which include, but is not limited to, the installation of a concrete multi-use trail, traffic signals, asphalt paving and striping, sanitary piping, storm sewer piping and water lines, are about 50-percent complete.

Phase one of the Gann Road project is already finished, while phase two is only 10-percent complete.
