Video: SPLOST Chief Breaks Down New Smyrna Elementary School

The $22 million replacement school will open in August 2013 and will have a capacity of almost 970 students.

Here Smyrna-Vinings Patch presents the third and final video from this past week’s public forum in which the Cobb County School District unveiled site and architectural plans for Smyrna’s new elementary school.

In this extended clip (about seven minutes worth), SPLOST Chief Doug Shepard goes into more detail about the school scheduled to open in 2013.

Remember that citizens are encouraged to supply input here concerning the new school, which will replace at least one current Smyrna elementary school. It was originally reported that would be replaced, but that decision has not been determined according to Shepard.

“One of the options that we’ll probably consider is closing Brown,’’ Shepard said. “It’s the smallest of the three schools and the oldest of the three schools ( and elementary schools have also been discussed as closure possibilities). But everything is on the table for feedback and we’ll have different options.’’

The building itself will be environmental sound, although not officially LEED certified.

“We asked the architect to design the building to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) standards established by the U. S. Green Building Council,’’ said Shepard. “This will be a green building, but it will not be certified as a green building because with certification comes extra expenses.’’

Shepard said more of the green building issues would be discussed at future meetings.
