Smyrna City Council Candidate's Signs Vandalized

Ward 7 candidate Vic Vankouski said the seven signs that were spray-painted cost $150 each.

Smyrna’s Ward 7 city council campaign just got ugly or at least orange. , Ward 7 city council candidate, reported Wednesday that several of his large campaign signs have been damaged with orange spray paint.

One of Yankouski’s neighbors brought the vandalism to his attention Wednesday morning. He said that seven of his signs were on their sides and sprayed with orange spray paint.

“Whoever did it, it was premeditated,” he said. “If it was a prank it would’ve been just one, but a total of seven? It’s a shame because it’s very costly.”

These large signs cost about $150 each, which brings the loss to about $1,050. Yankouski noted that the damage to the signs was not isolated to a particular section of Ward 7, but that signs throughout the ward were targeted. He has filed a complaint with the .

Yankouski posits that damage to the signs was done some time Tuesday night because he passed several of them Tuesday afternoon and they were still standing. While he has removed most of the damaged signs, two still remain; one at Fontaine Road and East West Connector and one on the eastbound side of East West Connector between Union Road and the Villas at Creekside.

Also on Wednesday, the Georgia Department of Transportation made a sweep of South Cobb Drive and removed numerous candidates’ campaign signs that weren’t allowed on the state's right of way.

The state defines its right of way rather abstractly as “it's the land over which state highways, railroads, power lines or other Georgia Department of Transportation property is built and maintained.’’

Candidates may pick up their removed signs at 1960 County Services Parkway in Marietta between the hours of 8-8:30 a.m. and 3-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 770-528-3238.
