Congratulations to senior Joan Bedinger, who was one of 141 students in the nation, and one of four in Georgia, named a Presidential Scholar last week.

Bedinger will be honored in Washington, D.C. from June 18 to 21, along with her most influential teacher, Mr. Thomas Jones, who teaches English and is the advisor in the International Baccalaureate program at Campbell.

"The U.S. Presidential Scholars exemplify what dedication to achievement and setting high standards can symbolize for all youth," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said. "The Department of Education congratulates these students on their artistic and academic accomplishments."

Selection as a U. S. Presidential Scholar is based on academic achievement, artistic ability, leadership, citizenship and service. Winners were selected by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA).Β The NFAA recognizes the most talented young people nationally in visual, literary and performing arts.

In 2010, Bedinger made a perfect score on the SAT. She also won the 2010 Georgia state PTSA Reflections Contest.Β At Campbell, Bedinger is the editor of the literary magazine and a member of the National Honor Society. In the fall, she will attend Princeton University.
