Campbell Head Football Coach Resigns Monday

After two struggling seasons, head football coach T.K. Dodd will not be leading the Spartans in 2011.

Campbell Principal Dr. Grant Rivera confirmed to Patch on Monday that Dodd has turned in his resignation as football coach. Rivera added that Dodd would remain at CHS in a teaching capacity, at least through the end of the current school year.

“T.K. did resign today for personal reasons,’’ said Rivera, praising the work Dodd had done with the school’s student-athletes. “There was no concern on my part about on the field issues, but he has stepped down.’’

Dodd’s two Campbell teams went a combined 3-17 after a 2-8 campaign in 2009 and a 1-9 season last fall. Last year’s team lost its final eight games and scored a combined 25 points in its final six losses.

“He’s an exceptional P.E. teacher, so we certainly hope that we will keep him the rest of the year if he chooses to do so,’’ Rivera said.

A Smyrna native, Dodd was a four-year letterman in football at F.T. Wills High (1985-88), where he played quarterback. He earned a football scholarship at N.C. State, lettering in 1990.

After several seasons as a student assistant at the ACC university, Dodd returned to Cobb County for assistant coaching stints at schools including Walton, before taking over as the head coach at Campbell in 2009.

Rivera said the search for the school’s next football coach has already begun.

“We have assembled an interview committee,’’ he said. “We posted the position today, so it is our hope to begin the interview process in the next several weeks.

“Our hope is to be very proactive in terms of publicizing the vacancy so to not only draw applicants from Cobb, but from outside the county, as well.’’
