Campbell Hoops Star Commits to Utah

High school sports roundup includes news of a former Lovett football star being named Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

Campbell High basketball player Justin Seymour has committed to play his college hoops at the University of Utah. The 6-foot-4 senior guard announced his decision via Twitter on Monday morning.

"I've made the decision to continue my educational interest & basketball at The University of Utah of the PAC 12," Seymour wrote.

Seymour averaged 20.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.28 assists last season for coach James Gwyn. He also had offers from Boston University, College of Charleston, San Diego State, La Salle, Houston and Central Florida.

On the football front, congratulations to the Campbell Spartans and first-year coach Harris Rainbow on their first victory of the season. Campbell scored a 33-7 win at Kennesaw Mountain on Friday night to end a 13-game losing skid.

Campbell, 1-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 4-AAAAA play, got a big game from Austin Green, who rushed 17 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a two-point conversion and had an interception on defense.

Darius Harris also rushed for a score as the Spartans racked up 257 yards on the ground, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Ricky James passed for 94 yards, including a 65-yard scoring pass to Arviel Jenkins. James also was on the receiving end of a scoring pass from Qadeem Salaam.

The Spartans will go for win No. 2 when Harrison, 1-5 and 0-3, comes to Smyrna for a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday.

Elsewhere, Lovett rolled to a 42-14 win over Therrell on Friday night to improve to 5-1 on the season. The 42 points marked a season-high for the Lions. Lovett welcomes Blessed Trinity to Martin E. Kilpatrick Stadium this Friday.

In other Lovett football news, former Lion, Zach Boden ’11, was recently named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week. Bowden’s strong performance came in Harvard’s 31-3 win over Lafayette on Oct. 1.

His highlights included a 43-yard TD run, the first of his collegiate career. For the day, Boden averaged 12 yards on his six touches of the ball. Boden is Lovett's all-time leading rusher having averaged more than 10 yards per carry at the school.

And finally, it was another tough night for the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack, who fell 28-10 at First Presbyterian Day School in Macon on Friday. The Pack, 2-5 overall and 1-3 in region play, has dropped three straight and five of six.

In the loss, quarterback Max Kemether went 24 of 38 passing for 215 yards. Receiver Jay Fields had 10 catches for 97 yards, while Matt Olson added 6 catches for 41 yards and John Alar had 5 for 42 yards.

On the ground, Fields scored the team’s lone touchdown while Richard Sherrell (24 yards) and Khalen Pinkett (22 yards) were the top gainers.

Defensively, Jacob Southerland led the way with 6½ stops and 3 assists with Fields added six solo tackles and 2 assists. Thomas East booted a 24-yard field goal to round out the scoring for the Pack, who are off this coming weekend.
