The Campbell Holiday Classic tips off today and both teams from the host school are looking for repeat performances that led to tournament titles a year ago. But it won’t be easy.
The Campbell boys enter Wednesday’s 8:30 p.m. game versus Carver-Atlanta having dropped three straight contests. Overall, the Spartans are 4-4 on the season and struggling to find an identity with leading returning player Matt Cotton out for the season with a knee injury.
In addition to Carver, Southwest Atlanta Christian and Forest Park are on the Spartans’ side of the bracket. The four teams in the other bracket include Pope, Greenforest Christian, Hiram and Washington.
There are six girls teams participating as there will be a two-game round robin before the top teams play for the title. The Lady Spartans, just 2-6 on the year, will face Carver-Atlanta tonight at 7. The other teams participating include Walton, South Cobb, South Gwinnett, as well as Creekside and Valdosta, as those two schools will tipoff tournament play Wednesday at 10 a.m.
Senior point guard Baylee Hawkins is the only returning starter from last year’s state final four team while key contributors D’Asia Cain and Erika Dorsey continue to battle knee injuries.

The boys improved to 5-4 on the season with a 50-39 win over Pace on Tuesday in the which continues through Thursday.

After winning its first seven games of the year, the Whitefield Academy boys have now dropped two straight following Tuesday’s 57-51 loss to South Carolina’s Hillcrest High in the 4th Annual Upward Classic in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Wolfpack will face Spartanburg High Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 as the 12-team tournament is scheduled through Friday. See here for more information and links to tournament live coverage.
Last week, the Pack lost by three points on the road to Alabama’s Enterprise High in the finals of the EHS Christmas Classic. Lorenzo Carter and Gerald Render were named to the all-tournament team for Whitefield.

Putting the wraps on some fall sports, The Marietta Daily Journal recently ran a nice feature on former Campbell football standout Chris Lewis-Harris, who just graduated from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga following a solid playing career for the Mocs.
Lewis-Harris was a four-year starter in UTC’s defensive backfield and finished his career with 184 career tackles and five interceptions.

Former Whitefield Academy standout Janey Fugate ('11) was recently named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week. Thirteen colleges and universities are a part of the conference. A freshman at Washington and Lee, Janey is a member of the school's women's track and field team.

Several Whitefield athletes recently received top recognition for excellence in their respective sports this past season.
Junior Jordan Jones was selected to both the all-state and all-region softball teams, making her one of only three players from the region to receive this honor. An outfielder, Jordan hit .468 this season, had 19 stolen bases, 19 RBI, and 39 hits. Her teammates, seniors Shelby Davidson and Hannah Perkins were both selected to the all-region softball team.
Senior Cameron Thornton was named to the 2011 MDJ Cobb County All-County Boys Cross Country Team. Cameron placed first at the state meet with a time of 15.58.68; he placed second at the Region 9-A meet with a time of 16:35.58. Cameron was also named to the Atlanta Track Club All-Metro Team.
And senior Jacob Southerland was selected to play in the Georgia North-South All-Star football game. He is the first Whitefield student to be selected for this honor.
