Campbell Middle Students Learn About Spinal Cord Injury Prevention

Smyrna school is visited by a Shepherd Center group consisting of therapists, counselors, nurses and former patients.

Last week, representatives from the Shepherd Center stopped by to teach students about the psychology, treatment and long-term effects of brain and spinal cord injuries.

It was part of a partnership between the Shepherd Center and the Cobb County School District to implement a brain and spinal cord injury prevention curriculum. It is the hope that increased awareness of brain and spinal cord injuries will affect risk-taking behavior among adolescents and decrease the incidence of serious injury.

The curriculum provides schools with three interdisciplinary units that span three weeks of instruction during middle school science. CMS was the first Cobb County school visited by the Shepherd Center team that consisted of therapists, counselors, nurses and former patients.
