Campbell seeks to break skid versus Walton

The 0-2 Spartans entertain the undefeated Raiders, while Lovett and Whitefield Academy both hit the road for Friday night high school football action.

Last Friday night, the bus carrying the Campbell Spartans football team actually broke down on its way to Fairburn. It was not the only break down of the night as the Spartans lost at Langston Hughes by a 33-18 final.

The non-region setback dropped the Spartans to 0-2 on the young season, and now having lost nine straight dating back to last year, it doesn't get any easier as Campbell plays host to a formidable Walton team tonight. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The , 2-0, are holding teams to just two touchdowns per game on average, and the offense exploded last week for 42 points at Milton.

Coach Harris Rainbow admitted, "It is no understatement to say that the kids are facing a giant this week at home. As a team we have prepared to face the giant and play hard for four quarters of football. What we are able to accomplish will be left out on that field come Friday night."

Coach Rainbow and his staff have set a new tone for the football program at Campbell. It is a no nonsense attitude when wearing the blue and white this year. But after losing a close game to Centennial in the opener and struggling at Langston Hughes, Rainbow is looking to show his team the way to a win.

"It is not a matter of if we will win, it is a matter of when we win," he said. "We as a team are doing things right. Good things will come if we stay focused on fundamental football and playing smart as a team unit."

Despite the 0-2 start, the young Spartan team has been able to post better stats across the board than past year's attempts. However, the undefeated Raiders come to Smyrna loaded up with several Division I-A college signees on both sides of the ball.

With the Raiders not being a region foe, regardless of Friday night's outcome, the home town team is not out of the playoff hunt. That is one positive thing Rainbow likes to point out. "One of our team goals was to make it to the playoffs this year and represent this region at state. Friday night, come win or lose, we still have that opportunity."

In other action Friday night, 2-0, travels to Callaway for a game at 7:30 p.m. at Callaway Stadium in LaGrange. And Whitefield Academy, 1-1,  wraps up its non-region schedule with a 7:30 p.m. game at Wilkinson County in Irwinton, Ga.
