CCSD Releases South Cobb Redistricting Maps

Brown Elementary proposed to close; two public forums scheduled for next week.

After speculating all summer, students, parents and teachers have a better idea of how South Cobb elementary schools will be redistricted for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years.

Tuesday the Cobb County School District posted two maps to its website each outlining the redistricting alternatives for elementary schools in the south part of the county. Both alternatives propose closing Sky View Elementary School in Mableton. They also propose closing as a traditional elementary school. The , a special education program that is currently located at Fitzhugh Lee School, would be relocated to the old Brown Elementary site.

The maps split the southern portion of the county into halves: Phase 1, which includes the schools west of South Cobb Drive, and Phase 2, which encompasses the schools east of South Cobb Drive.

The Phase 1 implementation would take effect August 2012. Since the and the addition will not be completed until 2013, they and other schools east of South Cobb Drive were grouped for Phase 2 implementation, which would take effect August 2013.

CCSD will hold meetings to discuss the two alternatives and to get input from citizens. The meeting for Phase 1 schools is set for Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Pebblebrook High School at 6:30 p.m. The meeting for Phase 2 schools will be the following evening at at 6:30 p.m.

In addition to attending public forums, concerned citizens can share their input on the public comment wall at the CCSD redistricting webpage or by sending an email to redistricting@cobbk12.org.

CCSD stressed on its website that after all input is heard, a final redistricting map will be developed that may not be an exact replication of either map, but a hybrid of the two. The final redistricting proposal and map will be presented to the Board of Education for a vote in February 2012.

Here is a small sampling of some of the comments that were found on the public comment wall at the redistricting webpage:

As a KSE parent and resident of King Valley at Vinings, I am writing to strongly support Map A. King Valley at Vinings subdivision (KS72) is a stone's throw from KSE and many families are currently able to walk their children to and from school every day. Under the proposed Map B, we would be redistricted to Nickajack - requiring additional bus resources and logistical complexities. Given the growing population of King Springs students in our subdivision, and the strong community involvement of parents in the school, please vote for Map A, which keeps this community in tact.

Thanks for the smoke and mirrors!! The intention to build a 22 million dollar school to alleviate the overcrowding and usage of trailers in the Smyrna schools, seem to only apply to three schools in that area. Not only did you add more neighborhoods to the Teasley school district, which was already overcrowded, you managed to not even change districting lines for King Springs or Nickajack. So the only schools that were truly being considered for the New Smyrna Elementary school were Belmont, Argyle and Brown (which you have chosen to close). I am curious how Heritage of Vinings has stayed in the Teasley school district when they clearly should be redistricted for the new school. Seems a little fishy to me. Thanks for nothing and clearly dividing lines based on socioeconomic issues, not fixing problems with overcrowding and usage of trailers.

Concord Village is being changed to Norton Park? Our property values shouldn't go in the toilet because Cobb County can't manage their resources - LEAVE CONCORD VILLAGE IN KING SPRINGS!!

We live less than 1/4 mile from KSE, on Queensgate Dr. in the King Valley at Vinings subdivision--Zone KS 72. We walk our daughter to school every day. Our son will be in Kindergarten next year. Map B redistricts us to Nickajack. It makes no sense to redistrict families that can walk to a school to a different one that requires busing/driving. Map B uses Reed Rd. as a boundary with several current housholds that are DIRECTLY across the street from KSE getting sent to Nickajack. Please leave Zone KS72 in KSE.
