CHS reporters selected for news magazine publication

Almost 90 Campbell High seniors have been designated as Work Ready Certified; Whitefield Academy students help Atlanta's City of Refuge.

Two reporters for the Spartan Chronicles have had their writing selected for the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) National Edition. The two seniors, Courtney Britton and Jeremiah Jones, were chosen for the compilation of the best student journalism for December 2011 from 400 high school journalism programs.

Britton was selected for "If I Were A Poor Black Kid"...EXCUSE ME?, her editorial response to a Forbes magazine columnist. Jones was chosen for a commentary on the Penn State scandal.

Eighty-eight seniors at CHS have been designated as Work Ready Certified. The Work Ready Certificate is a portable credential recognizable to employers, educators, and students. Designed by ACT, the company that created the ACT college exam, the certificate assesses training needed on the job.

Three core areas are determined for work ready certification: reading for information, locating information, and applied mathematics.

The Work Ready designation helps employers to identify applicants who have basic employable skills. Trainable habits included also indicate work-related attitudes and behaviors contributing to on-the-job success. Work Ready Certificates may be brought to job interviews to validate necessary skills and commitment to achievement.

Kennesaw State Mathematics Competiton

CHS Ninth grader Benjamin Chen and senior Suraj Bhat placed in the 90th percentile or above at the first round of the Kennesaw State University 2011 Math Competition. They will advance to the second round of the competition on January 31, 2012. The competition is sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Kennesaw State.

Whitefield students help City of Refuge

Whitefield Academy lower school students recently collected 375 toys for the City of Refuge, a downtown Atlanta ministry that offers resources and life-building tools to families in need.

Dressed in Santa hats, reindeer hats, and Christmas colors, the students marched in the annual "Toy Parade" from the Lower School to the Upper School, proudly carrying their donations to waiting vehicles. Fifth graders, who headed up the service project, led the parade and helped load the toys into cars.

“After the parade, the fifth graders and our chaperones traveled to City of Refuge in downtown Atlanta, where we met Pastor Bruce Deal, director and founder of City or Refuge,” said Angie Boone, fifth grade teacher. “He gave us a tour of the premises and shared all of the incredible things that God has done through the ministry in the last few years.”

The students then unloaded and sorted the toys for distribution to children in need.

Scholastic Art Awards

Numerous Whitefield middle and upper school students recently received awards in the Scholastic Art Award competition.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, which began in 1923, are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S. Past winners have included Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

Teens in grades 7 through 12 apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Judges look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal vision.
