Earth Week at The Lovett School Offers Something for Everyone

The Lovett School kicks off its celebration of Earth Week Friday, April 13.

Across campus, Lovett students are learning from their surroundings, practicing sustainability, and making respect for the environment second nature. As a result, the scope and breadth of Earth Week activities at Lovett grows each year. This year is no different. And, while water is this year’s Earth Week theme, it is not the only conservation topic that will be addressed.

Lovett’s fourth Walk to School/Carpool Day will kick off Earth Week this year and will take place on Friday, April 13. During the week of April 16, students will host a Food Fair and Plant Sale (plants grown by Lovett’s Botany class), a storyteller is coming and will focus on water issues, a Georgia Tech senior is coming to talk about the work he has done in Africa to help villages get water, and three speakers will be joining us from The Ocean Foundation.

On Wednesday, April 18, The Ocean Foundation presents Dr. David E. Guggenheim, who will speak to the Upper School, Frances Kinney, who will work with the Middle School and Sam Lardner, who will sing with the Lower School.
Dr. Guggenheim is a marine scientist, conservation policy specialist, submarine pilot and ocean explorer. He will speak with Upper School students in assembly and work with Marine Biology and Environmental Science classes. His presentation will focus on being an ocean explorer, mysteries and new ocean discoveries, overfishing and pollution, modern ocean exploration tools, and making a difference through activism or through choosing a career in science.

Middle school students will have the opportunity to work with Frances Kinney. Kinney developed the Ocean Connectors Education Program, an interdisciplinary environmental education project that crosses borders and cultural boundaries, linking students to create a shared sense of stewardship and to promote an early interest in environmental issues. MS students will learn about the role plastic plays in the marine environment, create jellyfish trash-art, and participate in a recycling project.

Lower School students will learn about our oceans through presentations and music by Sam Lardner. Mr. Lardner is a talented musician who has performed with his flamenco fusion band throughout Europe and the United States. Mr. Lardner will be performing songs from "Oceans Are Talking," his sixth album which was crafted as a fun-filled, spirited and powerful awareness tool for children in grades K-6 to empower them to take action in saving the world’s ocean environments and the creatures that live there.

The Ocean Foundation is a unique community foundation with a mission to support, strengthen, and promote those organizations dedicated to reversing the trend of destruction of ocean environments around the world.
