Smyrna Teacher Named Cobb Teacher of the Year

Campbell Middle's Rhonda Lokey was among three Cobb teachers who received this year's academic-level Teachers of the Year award.

A Smyrna teacher was one of three academic-level winners of this year's Cobb Teachers of the Year award.

Rhonda Lokey of Campbell Middle School, Tracie Bucy of Rocky Mount Elementary and Cathy Zingler of Lassiter High were named 2013-2014 Teachers of the Year for each academic level during surprise presentations on Wednesday.

Superintendent Michael Hinojosa made surprise visits to all three schools on the first day of pre-planning to announce the Teachers of the Year in front of their fellow teachers and staff members.

Lokey, a social studies teacher at Campbell Middle, has 31 years of experience in education. She has been selected as Teacher of the Year by her faculty peers at four different Cobb County middle schools: Dodgen, Lost Mountain, Smitha and Campbell.

Lokey has taken active leadership roles in the Cobb County School District, including being a instructor for the District’s New Teacher Institute and co-chair the Middle Grades Committee for the Urban Education certification program at Kennesaw State University, according to the Cobb County School District.

The District Teacher of the Year will be selected from the three academic level winners following a comprehensive interview process, said CCSD spokesman Jay Dillon in a release.
