Smyrna's Top Teachers, Students and Volunteers Recognized Monday

The Mayor's Education Awards acknowledge the exceptional academic achievement of Smyrna school students and outstanding staff and volunteers for their contributions.

Smyrna’s best and brightest from the area school hallways will be honored tonight as Mayor Max Bacon presents the Mayor’s Education Awards.

A teacher, student and volunteer from each of the dozen Smyrna area schools, including the public charter school , will be recognized during a 6:30 p.m. ceremony at Smyrna’s City Hall. The award presentation runs live on Charter Communications Channel 19.

A strong advocate for education, Mayor Bacon created this award recognizing educational excellence in late 2005 to acknowledge the exceptional academic achievement of Smyrna school students and outstanding staff and volunteers for their contributions.

“I am excited about recognizing our students for their academic accomplishments,” Bacon said. “Not only is it the kids, but the parents, volunteers and teachers constant support of our schools that make them the best places to be.”

Each of the principals from the 12 Smyrna area schools selected the names of the award recipients. A list of this year's winners can be found here.

Students could be honored for outstanding academic performance, while leadership, helping others or rising above circumstance to do their very best were further criteria. Staff awards could be either for faculty or office staff and volunteers may also be couples who take an active involvement in the betterment of the school.

In its dedication to quality education and the healthy development of students’ minds and future, the City of Smyrna gives the awards twice a year at the end of the school semester.
