Summer School Bell Rings In Cobb

Campbell High School class of 2011 readies for Saturday's graduation ceremonies.

On the day that Cobb county public school kids were dismissed for the summer, the class of 2011 fidgeted through a two-hour graduation rehearsal Wednesday at Kennesaw State University’s Convocation Center. This was the second rehearsal for the class of about 480 students.

Campbell’s commencement ceremony is Saturday at 7 p.m.

At the rehearsal students received coaching on how to behave and received the entrance tickets they would give their family members.

This will be the first year CHS has held its commencement ceremony at Convocation Center. Traditionally it is held at Turner Chapel in Marietta.

“Turner Chapel is a smaller venue, slightly smaller,” said Lorenzo Floyd, CHS assistant administrator. “And we wanted to have a larger venue for some of the larger schools. We have 2,500 students.”

Floyd has been an educator for 12 years, but has only served a year at Campbell. Saturday’s commencement ceremony will be his first at CHS.

“I’m kind of used to the graduation scene,” he said. “I was at Osborne for five years. Graduation is actually my favorite part of the year for the kids. This is their first huge goal in life and I’m excited about it.”

Some parents stayed to watch the rehearsal. Deidre Martin’s only child, Joshua, will graduate Saturday. Martin said she was feeling “excited and a little sad” to see her son graduate.

“I’ll probably be crying and boo-hooing,” she said. “It’s the end of an era.”

After graduation Martin will attend a two-year college before attending a four-year school, his mother said.
