Winning Art Turns Ordinary into the Extraordinary
Before you throw away a paper towel roll, do you ever wonder what it could be used for instead of landfill?
Smyrna kids, teens and families answered this question with a wide range of whimsical, patriotic and earth-friendly art. Smyrna Public Library and Keep Smyrna Beautiful co-sponsor the annual "Recycled Art Contest" to encourage the re-use and recycling of materials.

Participating families use everyday household items such as cereal boxes, CDs, eggs cartons and soda bottles to create sculpture, diorama, and collages. Participants were encouraged to use this year's Summer Reading theme, "Dig Into Reading" for inspiration.
The First Place winner in the "Family Category," the Milliron Family, created an entire garden depicting "Dewey" the bookworm growing a crop of books to enjoy. "He is reading his freshly harvested book called The Hungry Caterpillar -- he just picked it today!" The Millirons used an egg carton to create the garden, coffee grounds for dirt, and bubble wrap for "Dewey." The books he harvests are made from cardboard and pages from outdated textbooks.
