Lovett goes for school win No. 402 tonight

Lions host Therrell while Campbell and Whitefield hit the road to try to end losing skids in local high school football action.

Something’s got to give tonight in Kennesaw where winless travels to take on winless Kennesaw Mountain in a Region 4-AAAAA contest. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. between the Spartans (0-5 overall, 0-2 in the region) and the Mustangs (0-5, 0-2).

After last week’s 43-14 homecoming loss to North Cobb, Campbell has now dropped 13 straight overall and 21 of its last 23 games. Kennesaw Mountain has lost nine straight and 14 of its last 15. The lone Mustang victory in that stretch came in a 25-3 win at Campbell last year.

The Spartans are off a brutal three-game stretch in which they were outscored by North Cobb, McEachern and Walton by a 147-21 combined score. On the season, Campbell is giving up an average of 41.4 points per game.

But say this for the Spartans, there doesn’t appear any quit in them.

“Our kids have kept fighting and representing Campbell High School the right way,’’ said first-year coach Harris Rainbow. “We’ve got a huge challenge tonight and I believe in our kids and our program.’’

One of the few bright spots in last week’s loss to the Warriors was the passing of quarterback Ricky James, who connected on scoring passes to Qadeen Salaam and Dylan Hickey.

Elsewhere tonight, it’s another long road trip for Whitefield Academy as the Wolfpack travel to Macon to take on Presbyterian Day School. The Pack, 2-4 overall and 1-2 in region play, fell 61-6 to Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy last week.

In the loss, quarterback Max Kemether was 12 of 34 passing for 125 yards. Freshmen Matt Olson hauled in 5 catches for 70 yards, while Khalen Pinkett picked up 40 yards on five carries.

The Vikings, 4-2 overall and 2-1 in region action, scored a 24-17 win at Whitefield last year.

On the banks of the Chattahoochee River tonight, the Lovett Lions will begin a three-game home stand in welcoming in Therrell. The Lions are 4-1 overall after a 28-13 win over Jackson-Atlanta last week.

Last year they beat Therrell, 51-14. The Panthers, 1-4, are coming off their first win of the season last weekend with a victory over South Atlanta. The Lions, who began playing football in 1960, are seeking school win No. 402 after reaching the 400-victory plateau a few weeks back.

"400 wins over a 50-year period of time is an outstanding achievement," Lovett Director of Athletics Steve Franks said of the program’s accomplishment, "and I am extremely proud of all the coaches, players, students, and fans, who have contributed to this great milestone. It says a lot about the quality of the program when you average almost eight wins per year over this period of time."
