Whitefield Academy 'Gaines' Another State Title

The Wolfpack snagged a third state title Saturday when they defeated Athens Christian 73-49.

UGA signee Kenny Gaines led the Whitefield Wolfpack to their third state title in school history. Gaines set the tone for his team with 19 first-half points, thrilling the Wolfpack fans with four dunks. Athens Christian hung close during the first quarter, closing to within five at the buzzer to end the period. Gaines led the charge in the second quarter as the Pack went into the locker room with a 19-point lead.

A trio of sophomores stepped up in the second half. Led by Erick Lockett (18 points), Lorenzo Carter (6 points, 11 rebounds) and Khalen Pinkett (9 points), the Wolfpack took control of the game and stretched their lead winning by 24. Senior Jordan Coar also contributed as floor leader with 10 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals. Athens Christian had consistent foul trouble throughout the game and was unable to stop Whitefield’s scoring run despite their attempts to rally.

"It is no secret that we push and challenge our players, I am proud of them for stepping up and demonstrating grit and valor; values that are at the core of our program," said Coach Tyrone Johnson.

Whitefield is no stranger to the Macon Coliseum having won the state title in 2003 and 2009 while competing a total of seven times in the past 12 years. If the second half efforts of the underclassmen are any indication, they will be a contender for some years to come.
