Where's the Best Place to See Fourth of July Fireworks in Smyrna-Vinings?

The answer may surprise you.

Where’s the best spot to watch fireworks in Smyrna-Vinings? Not Smyrna-Vinings.

The City of Smyrna doesn’t host a Fourth of July fireworks show. Now I know what you’re thinking, didn’t I see fireworks on the Village Green last year? You’re right. You probably did see fireworks last year, but it wasn’t for the Fourth. The city’s fireworks display is held each year in August to celebrate its birthday.

“We’re asked frequently in Smyrna if we do fireworks on the Fourth and we do not,” said Ward 3 Council Representative Teri Anulewicz. “We actually save our big fireworks display for the annual Smyrna birthday celebration.”

Weather permitting, Smyrna’s Birthday Celebration will be Saturday, Aug. 4 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Village Green. We’ll be celebrating 140 years of cityhood with music by Banks and Shane and Smokey’s Farmland Band with the fireworks as the birthday finale.

You can still see fireworks at the Marietta Fourth in the Park celebration, which includes a parade at 10 a.m. on Independence Day, concerts, an arts and crafts festival and a fireworks finale. Admission is free.

Six Flags Over Georgia will also put on a patriotic fireworks display at nightfall. The park is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

It’s illegal for private citizens to have fireworks inside city limits because of the risk of fire. But check out these tips from Cobb Police to see what kind of fireworks Georgia law permits you to use without a license. Then read up about fireworks safety with this post from the Cobb County Fire Department.

When, Oh When will we stop having to suffer through Banks and Shane and get some real entertainment for this event. We have had to suffer through this washed up band enough. There is so much talent available and here we go again with the same old junk. Maybe the event will grow if we try some new things.

I too wish we had different bands. Mable House gets a pretty good selection for their summer series. Roxie Watson and Blair Crimmins were standouts last year. Lawrenceville has Shawn Mullins for one of their free concerts this year. I wish our summer bands were more like those and what we used to have for the Sunset concerts that were on Sundays.
(No offense to Banks and Shane) However, I don't really want more people at the birthday celebration - last year was PACKED.

Mike, I hope you'll like the first act of the night, Smokey's Farmland Band. They play fantastic Americana-style bluegrass.

Are these the apartments that were once called "Garrison Plantation"?
Lissa K. June 15, 2013 at 09:32 pm
This is Garrison Plantation - Garrison Lakes - Lakefront Vista. I lived there when it was familyRead More owned. It went from sister to brother then sold. Changed name from Garrison Plantation (because it wasn't PC) (but no one thought about what a garrison was) to Garrison Lakes (there's only one lake) to Lakefront Vista (under new ownership.) It's a dump now. The layout and size of the apts. are great. Even the location is great. Still know some people there. But it went downhill.

I'd rather answer the question "How do you feel about Roswell Street Baptist Church?" MyRead More answer: can't stand it. This incident is just another in its long and bigoted history. During the anti gay lifestyle debacle it gave out copies of the 10 Commandments. That anti gay resolution drafted by Gordon Wysong and enacted by the Cobb Co. Commissioners cost the county an Olympic venue. Whenever I hear about that church I think of the OM who called the church's prominent members The Marietta Mafia!

Its sad, that young people who are gay and often struggle to accept themselves as they are, faceRead More such fury and rejection by a church that preaches love, compassion and forgiveness for most but not all. No wonder many young people, the vast majority of whom are or will be heterosexual find the church increasingly irrelevant in their lives with attitudes like this.
