Design Inspirations - What is your favorite (Movie)?

Sometimes we need a little design inspiration from our favorite flicks.

More often than not we are told or (advised maybe) what will be the next trend. I’m wondering if just a room full of people decided our design fate. Do you remember parachute pants? Mauve carpets?… Just a couple things I had in the 80s! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of many magazines and I even subscribe to them, I just don’t want anyone telling me what I should wear or what my home should look like.

When it comes to my home, I personally like a comfortable place where my family can relax and my guests are welcomed. Being in the design field, I have a philosophy of making sure my client’s ideals, visions, and personality are reflected in the end result. Some people like only new furniture, others love to shop at consignment stores, flea markets and good ole yard sales. There is no right or wrong in my opinion. I personally like the combination of the two. I like the idea of something old, something new, something borrowed and something toile. (which doesn’t have to always be blue)

I am always amazed to see such wonderful creations around me. Yes many come from my favorite magazines, but other design inspirations are from a favorite movie or rather movies. I think the kitchen was absolutely brilliant in "Something’s Gotta Give."  The set director, Beth Rubino, is one amazing individual who captured my vision of an ideal kitchen beautifully. A friend reminded me that this kitchen is one of the most sought after kitchen layouts. It is truly a practical and functional kitchen that holds lots of people. I find that everyone who comes to my home basically congregates around my kitchen island more often than not.

When I was growing up I fell in love with the house from "Home Alone," which by the way is for a bargain price of $2,175,000! I personally liked the attic bedroom with the hideaway bed. I would have totally claimed that room for myself!

Another great movie that had such a great design sense was "Father of the Bride." I think this house was my interpretation of the quintessential American home with the white picket fence on the perfect street with the perfect backyard. When my husband and I were searching for house I often reflected back on this house as my “ideal” house. Every room of this house said, “welcome” and that is what I try to convey in my current home. I have a white Cape Cod with a red front door and a white picket fence. So it’s not exactly like the house in the "Father of the Bride,'' but it does have similar qualities and it is what my family calls home. It is where I live, work and play and hopefully my personal design style is reflected within my space.

I basically took elements of all my loves of various spaces from these movies to create that feeling of comfort and hospitality to my home. For example, take the living room in "Father of the Bride." Do you remember two comfy white slip-covered sofas with pillows? I thought it looked so inviting. Those two sofas were inspiration for my two white slip-covered chairs in my office with one of a kind hand-made pillow covers that reflected my personality. If you something that catches your eye when you walk down the street or when you walk in to a store, don’t hesitate. Write it down or at least make a mental note. If you don’t know a color on a wall, just ask. One of my favorite places to shop is G Scott on Concord Road. They have a gorgeous shade of pale green at the register counter. The color is Salisbury Green from Benjamin Moore Paints. I loved that color and I often saw customers walk by several times mention they love that shade of green as well, so one day I asked! Simple and easy steps can help create an inspiration room for you. Oh by the way, I always have my camera. Photos are a great visual aid to help bring elements together.

I took the liberty of taking some pictures of my home, which is a tiny bit of a reflection of "The Father of the Bride" Home, of course seen through my eyes. Thanks for reading and I look forward to share my thoughts with you soon. If you like to read more of my blogs come and visit me at www.pondicherrydesigns.com.  à bientôt {see you soon} - Trusha
