Keep Smyrna Beautiful Rakes in More Awards

Smyrna's Keep Georgia Beautiful chapter won four awards at the state and national level for best chapter, top community improvement project and volunteer of the year.

Keep Smyrna Beautiful, the city’s Keep Georgia Beautiful chapter received top honors at the state and national level Monday, Nov. 14 at the Keep Georgia Beautiful Appreciation luncheon. The Smyrna chapter was awarded the first place prize in the state and second place nationally based on the city’s population group.

Kirk said she was “overwhelmed” when she learned that her chapter was first in the state because of its work in the community including document shredding events, the employee Work Glove Luncheon and the 7,400 volunteer hours logged by more than 1,000 municipal court volunteers.

However, the good news was still coming, as she would later learn that KSB had taken second place at the national level and that Smyrna's community garden had won first place as the top community improvement project. One of KSB’s volunteers Angie Bolton was also honored with the prestigious Carolyn Crayton Award given to the state's top female volunteer.

“She has personally donated thousands of dollars to Keep Smyrna Beautiful,” said Ann Kirk, KSB’s executive director. “She does an awful lot of volunteer work and she doesn’t even live in Smyrna.”

Bolton has been an IBM employee for 26 years. It was through her work at IBM that she got involved with KSB. In serving Smyrna, Bolton has cleaned illegal dumping sites in the city, organized several corporate cleanup campaigns through her company and served on KSB's board of directors. In addition to be recognized at the Keep Georgia Beautiful luncheon, Bolton also received a commendation from the city of Smyrna at last week’s city council meeting.
