Smyrna-Vinings Residents Walk in Cobb County Relay for Life

More than 5,000 people, 196 teams came together at the Cobb County Relay for Life event to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, remember those who lost the battle, and fight back against the disease.

The Smyrna-Vinings area was well represented among the more than 5,000 participants at Cobb’s Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature event.

The festivities began Friday at 6 p.m. at Marietta’s Jim Miller Park with the survivor/caregiver celebration lap. The overnight, relay-style walk concluded Saturday at 6 a.m.

Among the local schools with groups participating in helping to raise money to fight cancer included , , , , , and elementary schools; and middle schools; and .

Relay for Life started 27 years ago when one man, Dr. Gordy Klatt, chose to make a statement about the endless pain, suffering and loss from cancer. He raised $27,000 by walking around a track for 24 hours and tapped into a network of people who also wanted to be a part of the fight against cancer.

In 2011, more than 4 million people across the world will participate in 6,000 Relay for Life events. It is the largest cancer fundraising activity in the world having raised more than $4 billion. – Hunt Archbold
