City Council Meeting, Meet Senate Candidates in Smyrna-Vinings This Week

Here's what's happening around town in the week ahead.

Remember, today is Labor Day, a federal holiday. Most government offices are closed, and school is not in session.

1. Speak your mind at Tuesday's meeting of the Smyrna City Council at City Hall at 7:30 p.m. The council will consider expanding its economic opportunity zone to allow more businesses to take advantage of tax breaks for hiring new full-time employees.

2. Bring your appetite to Food Truck Tuesday, which will be held between 5 and 9 p.m. at Taylor-Brawner Park. There will be plenty of delicious food served from trucks from many local restaurants. Come back to Patch tomorrow for the complete lineup.

3. Bring your business card to the Vinings Business Association's Tuesday morning luncheon at Social Vinings from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The guest speaker will be noted investigative journalist and Emmy Award winner Dale Cardwell. Registration for the event is $20 in advance or at the door.

4. Stock up for winter at the Marietta First United Methodist Church's semi-annual consignment sale on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Although there is a $5 early shopping fee for Thursday, you will have first pick at great winter clothes and supplies for baby. Alternately, you can browse the sale for free on Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

5. Meet your 2014 senatorial candidates
Derrick Grayson and Karen Handel on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. at the Cobb County Republican Party's First Saturday Breakfast at their headquarters. This event is not a debate, but will allow you to ask the candidates questions about their positions on issues important to you. Every First Saturday Breakfast for the next few months will feature two candidates for political office in a similar format.
