State leaders say they will delay implementing the Georgia drug-testing law while a similar measure in Florida is sorted out in federal court. File|Patch
Nick M July 4, 2014 at 10:44 am
Mack, it's a waster of taxpayers money. Some facts about Florida where the law was passed and thenRead More stuck down: A U.S. judge has struck down a Florida law requiring drug screening for welfare recipients, saying that it violated the constitutional protection against unreasonable searches. The testing fee of $25 to $45 was to be repaid by the state if the test came back negative, but applicants who tested positive would have been barred from receiving benefits for a year. Judge Mary Scriven permanently halted enforcement of the law in her ruling. She agreed with an earlier court finding that "there is nothing inherent in the condition of being impoverished that supports the conclusion that there is a concrete danger that impoverished individuals are prone to drug use ..." During the time the law was in effect, about 2.6 percent of recipients tested positive for illegal drugs, mostly for marijuana, according to the court documents. The failure rate was well below that of the general population. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found in a 2009 survey that about, 8.7 percent, of the population aged 12 or older had used illicit drugs in the previous month. Generally, the courts have allowed suspicionless drug testing only when public safety is at risk, such as for armed officers or railroad workers who operate heavy equipment. http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/welfare.asp

I have often wondered what liability a store owner would have if a criminal shot and killed someoneRead More in their store. If by Targets request I didn't carry my gun into their store and I was shot and killed because I was unable to defend myself...how does Target proved that they were properly looking after my best welfare?? My bleeding corpse would make one wonder if Target did all they could to keep their customers safe. Would they have to prove it? OR....do the criminals have more rights than I do? I would think that a certain portion of my death would have to be their fault if they didn't take steps to keep ALL guns out of the store?? Thoughts?
Phil Evans July 5, 2014 at 01:47 pm
I believe Target is riding the fence to try and appease Bloomberg's Moms Demand Action as well asRead More trying not to make gun owners mad enough to not shop there. They do not yet have a hard policy of prohibiting guns. They are merely "asking" that we don't carry there. At least one person I know of has openly carried his pistol in a Target store since this announcement, with no issues. I say carry on as if they've not made the request, to show the public what this really is about - politics and not safety. All they can do is ask you to leave, and if they do, publicize it to help others avoid their stores.

Our society doesnt look at children as target practice, so when presented with a child with a gun, I dont buy that the average citizen would shoot a child. @ AP hahaha! Also, seems if the Chief of Police states that there was less crime when citizens wereRead More armed, that it would hold just a little water, don't you think? Reagan's peace through strength had a purpose. If we strengthen our military, our enemies will think twice before attacking us. Cut the military, and boom! We're usually attacked in some way within 6 months. Look what happened under Clinton after the military was gutted. Peace through strength is not a tangible thing - but being an ideal, can apply anywhere. That's why some don't get it- it goes deeper than the surface. It does translate to areas where more people are armed. Criminal think twice before going where they aren't sure if the person they are robbing might be armed. Its really interesting to me to read some of these comments by people who clearly never go into theRead More Cumberland area. Those who have would know that Cumberland Mall has and continues to go through a very positive transformation. New Stores such Michael Kors, H&M, White House/Black Market, Sephora and the soon to open APPLE Store are fundamentally changing the quality of the map in a positive way. The restaurants such as Teds Montana Grill, and Maggianos are always packed. The Galleria Mall will no doubt begin to see positive changes as investment is now flooding into the area in anticipation of the new stadium development. They have already announced plans for a new large high end hotel on property. As for pedestrian access, I’m upset that the original plans seem inadequate but the good thing is that we have the GRTA who now reviews these projects and gives feedback. I only hope that the designers make the necessary changes. Those who have been in the area will see that sidewalks, trails, and enhanced landscaping and pedestrian access is being aggressively developed throughout the area. Lets hope the same continues with the new stadium site. Now lets get really serious and talk about adding a Marta line to Perimeter area across the top of 285.
