Get Out Weekend Planner

Here's a roundup of activities in and around Smyrna-Vinings including a festival, chances to get active and give back.

Have Fun The Spring Jonquil Festival is this Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 19. The festival gets underway Saturday at 10 a.m. More than 150 arts and crafts vendors participate in the festival annually. This year’s entertainment includes a puppet show by Peter Hart and a musical performance by Scott Thompson, one of the founding members of Peachtree Station. Kids can play in an array of inflatables, see a fire truck up close and create sand art. The festival begins Sunday at noon and admission is free both days. Atkins Park Tavern holds its 10th annual Crawfish Boil Saturday and Sunday beginning each day at 1 p.m. The chef at Atkins will prepare fresh crawfish and there’s even a rumor that Oysterfest was such a hit that they’ve shipped …

Argyle's annual Walk-a-Mile event is coming up on Saturday, April 28th, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Come out for a morning of family fun! Walkers will meet at Argyle Elementary and walk along the Spring Road bike trail. There is no cost to walk, but donations of old sneakers and cell phones are encouraged. Whitefield Student Heads to State Playoffs for Two Sports

Robby Keough may be a state champion twice before his sophomore year. He's competing at the state level in two sports, tennis and track.

  Whitefield Academy freshman Robby Keough, son of Kevin and Diana Keough of Atlanta, is headed to the state playoffs in tennis…and track. A week after winning the 5A regional tennis championship as part of Whitefield Academy’s varsity boys tennis team, Keough also qualified for state sectionals in track and field, placing third in the 1600m with a time of 4:23.75. According to MileSplit.us, at the time of the race, Robby had the fastest time in the U.S. in the 1600m for a high school freshman. Dubbed a “Rising Star” by In the Game magazine in November 2010, Robby is an anomaly, excelling in two same-season sports. “Here’s a kid who trains three to four days a week around a tennis season and still manages to excel in both sports,” said …

Last Chance to Sign Up For Jonquil City Jog

It’s a big weekend for Smyrna with the Spring Jonquil Festival and the Jonquil City Jog, but aren’t you forgetting something?

Your last chance to register online for the Jonquil City Jog is Thursday, April 26 at 6 p.m. This fast, flat 5K is a Peachtree Road Race Qualifier. Run a 5K in Smyrna and Support a Good Cause

RaceTrac's Run for Research 5K is a fundraiser for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Smyrna based RaceTrac is hosting a fundraising 5K run on Saturday to help support Parkinson's research. Runners of all levels are welcome and the event will include free food, prizes and music. The 1K fun run will award prizes to all participating children. Registration is still open, and you can sign up online or at the race site near the RaceTrac store support center in Smyrna. Packet pickup is on race morning. You can find more details about this family friendly run at the event website. The event will donate all proceeds, including the runner registration fee, to support the work of the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Three Whitefield Athletes from Smyrna Sign to Play Collegiate Sports

Eight Whitefield Academy students signed to play collegiate sports at NCAA schools next year. Three of the athletes hail from Smyrna.

Eight Whitefield Academy seniors signed to play collegiate sports at NCAA schools across the country. These students will be playing at Berry College, Carnegie Mellon University, Carson-Newman College, Boston College, The Citadel, Georgia Southwestern State University, Texas A&M University and the University of Georgia. Kyle Childree is a Smyrna resident and son of Edward and Debbie Childree. He has committed to play tennis with Boston College. Childree has been the number one singles player for Whitefield for all four years of high school. He is the captain of the varsity boys tennis team and during his playing career has been ranked in the top 10 players of the state. Ty Hampel signed to play golf with Berry College in Rome, Ga. Whitefield Academy 'Gaines' Another State Title

The Wolfpack snagged a third state title Saturday when they defeated Athens Christian 73-49.

  UGA signee Kenny Gaines led the Whitefield Wolfpack to their third state title in school history. Gaines set the tone for his team with 19 first-half points, thrilling the Wolfpack fans with four dunks. Athens Christian hung close during the first quarter, closing to within five at the buzzer to end the period. Gaines led the charge in the second quarter as the Pack went into the locker room with a 19-point lead. A trio of sophomores stepped up in the second half. Led by Erick Lockett (18 points), Lorenzo Carter (6 points, 11 rebounds) and Khalen Pinkett (9 points), the Wolfpack took control of the game and stretched their lead winning by 24. Senior Jordan Coar also contributed as floor leader with 10 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals. …

Update: Lovett Heads to AA Championship Game

Lions battle Buford Saturday for state title while the Whitefield Academy Boys Varsity team takes on Athens Christian in the Class A Finals.

The Lovett girls basketball team heads to the AAstate championship game Saturday, playing region rival Buford. Coach Liz Kennedy's Lions will seek the program's first state championship after beating Laney 56-41 in the semifinals on Thursday. The game will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Macon Centreplex. The win over No. 2 Laney followed a quarterfinal win  over No. 1 Model. No. 4 Buford  beat unranked Brooks County to head to the championship game, according to the Lovett website. Lovett, 27-5 on the year, lost 45-39 to Buford in the Region 6-AA finals, before reeling off four straight wins in the state tournament. Whitefield Wolfpack Lights Up the Knights

Whitefield Academy's varsity basketball team defeated Saint Francis High School Wednesday. They face Saint Thomas Aquinas Saturday at Marietta High School.

  Whitefield Academy left no doubt Wednesday night they have their sights clearly set on extending their season for three more games. Before a full house the Wolfpack basketball team in the second round of the state tournament trounced the Knights from Saint Francis High School 72 to 30. The first half was a hotly contested round as the both teams battled back and forth before the Pack pulled ahead in the last two minutes to take a 10-point lead into the locker with Kenny Gaines hitting a three at the buzzer. Campbell Wrestler Makes School History at State Tournament

Jamez Taylor is set to be ranked first in the state when he enters his senior season.

Campbell High School hasn’t seen a wrestler like Jamez Taylor in more than 10 years. The 132-pound junior placed fourth at the Georgia High School Association’s state wrestling tournament held Feb. 16-17 and is set to be ranked first in the state going into his senior season. “He is the first Campbell wrestler to place in the top four since 2000 and only the second to place this high in over 20 years,” said Shawn Slenczka, Campbell High School’s head wrestling coach. Whitefield WolfPack Scores Fourth Region Title

The team now advances to the state tournament, which begins Saturday, Feb. 25 at Whitefield Academy.

Whitefield Academy's varsity basketball team defeated Landmark Christian 71 to 45 Saturday night to win it's fourth consecutive region title, going undefeated in region play all four years. Whitefield has won their region championship eight of the last 11 years and won state titles in 2003 and 2009. "Honestly, I could not be more proud of our guys," said Tyrone Johnson, Whitefield Academy's varsity basketball coach. "God has truly blessed us this season, it is a huge accomplishment to represent Region 9 as the tournament champion. I think it puts us in position to acheive our remaining goals for the year.
