This weekend get out to a night of fashion, art, music and entertainment at the Uniquely Us Kids & Teens Fashion Show; or silent and live auctions, food, music, and performances by a Special Olympics Gymnastic Team at a Special Olympics Fundraiser.

Smyrna to Host Special Olympics Fundraiser

Join the American Legion Post 160 this weekend to enjoy food, music and entertainment while raising money for Special Olympics-Cobb.

This Sunday, April 7, the American Legion Post 160 of Smyrna will host its 25th Annual Fundraiser for Special Olympics-Cobb.   The event will be held from noon to 6 p.m. at Post 160's office located at 160 Legion Drive in Smyrna. Smyrna-Vinings and Cobb residents are invited to join the American Legion family and enjoy silent and live auctions, food, music and performances by Special Olympics Gymnastic Team.   Admission is $5. Find out how you can celebrate Veterans Day this weekend and support your local veterans by participating in the Distribution of Poppies.

Note: The City of Smyrna is holding a Veterans Day ceremony at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at Brinkley Park, in addition to the Veterans Day service held by The American Legion Post 160 at 11 a.m. outside of the Legion office on 160 Legion Drive. This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend Spotlight features an area Veterans Day event in Smyrna where residents can show their support for local veterans. The 5th Annual Smyrna Veterans Day Service will be held this Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at Brinkley Park next to The American Legion Post 160 office at 160 Legion Drive SE in Smyrna. Memorial Day: A National Day of Remembrance

Members of Smyrna's American Legion Post 160 remember those who gave all.

  Memorial Day. That solemn day of the year when we, as a Nation, pause to remember, mourn, and honor those men and women who have made the supreme sacrifice on our behalf. More precisely, it is a day when we should be reflecting on those who have made that sacrifice. Too often, we do not, except in small measure. Memorial Day used to be a day when businesses closed. Towns held parades often ending at the local war memorial, cemetery, or sometimes the county courthouse, where speeches and prayers were offered up on behalf of the fallen and their survivors. Local civic organizations, veterans’ organizations, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, took time to clean the gravesites and plant flowers or flags to honor the casualties of our wars. And …

‘Poppy Ladies’ Offer Tokens of Remembrance

The money donated in exchange for the poppies directly benefits veterans in VA hospitals.

You see them twice a year. Each Memorial Day and Veterans Day, the Poppy Ladies of the American Legion Post 160 Auxiliary take up baskets of red, crepe paper poppies and station themselves outside grocery stores and shopping centers to pass out tiny reminders of those who made a huge sacrifice. “I personally don’t feel that enough is done for our men and women that have served and suffered for the good of our country and keep us at peace,” said Marilyn Roy, chair of the poppy distribution. “That’s my personal feeling.” Most of these women know the impacts of that sacrifice firsthand. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary have to be veterans or related to a veteran—a spouse, sister, mother, grandmother, daughter or granddaughter. It …

Smyrna-Vinings is heading in to a long weekend and we’ve got some important information you’ll need whether you’re staying in town or hitting the road. Remember there will be no trash pickup on Memorial Day, Monday May 28. Here’s the modified schedule: ·        Monday routes picked up on Tuesday. ·        Tuesday routes picked up on Wednesday. ·        Thursday and Friday routes unchanged. ·        No yard waste collection during holiday schedule weeks And of course there’s no mail and banks are closed in observance of Memorial Day. Mother's Day Weekend Planner

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and Smyrna-Vinings Patch has rounded up a list of activities for the family or for mom to enjoy solo. For the Family: Even the family dog can get in on this event. Dog Days at the Market at Riverview Landing is Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. This fun event features a five-acre dog pasture, a farmer’s market, live music and local beer from Sweetwater Brewery. Several food trucks will serve tasty bites on site including Smyrna’s own Happy Belly Food Truck. Bands performing at the event are Shed, Rocket 88, The Non-Essentials and The Owls. Flippin for Kids Pancake Breakfast on Saturday

The annual event staged by the Smyrna Optimist Club benefits MUST Ministries.

Going now a decade strong, the “Flippin for Kids’’ Pancake Breakfast is set for Saturday morning at Smyrna First United Methodist Church, which is located at 1315 Concord Road. Conducted by the Smyrna Optimist Club, event tickets are just five bucks and that allows for all the pancakes, coffee and sausage consumption – plus good-time fellowship – that one can ask for. Takeout is available, too. The 10th annual event runs from 7:30 - 11 a.m. and proceeds benefit MUST Ministries. Smyrna Academy of Excellence applies for a $2.55 million grant and other school news you can use.

After receiving its first planning grant from the Georgia Department of Education, the Smyrna Academy of Excellence submitted a $2.55 million grant application to the GA DOE Race To The Top (RT3) Innovation Fund on Nov. 1. Georgia RT3 is a $19.4 million fund that provides competitive grants to support new approaches to school improvement. The purpose of the RT3 Innovation Fund is to support partnerships that develop or implement innovative and high-impact programs aimed at producing positive outcomes for students. Additionally, the state intends to use the Innovation Fund to determine best practices in innovative programming related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), which is the chosen curriculum for the Smyrna …
