Smyrna Academy of Excellence applies for a $2.55 million grant and other school news you can use.
After receiving its first planning grant from the Georgia Department of Education, the Smyrna Academy of Excellence submitted a $2.55 million grant application to the GA DOE Race To The Top (RT3) Innovation Fund on Nov. 1. Georgia RT3 is a $19.4 million fund that provides competitive grants to support new approaches to school improvement. The purpose of the RT3 Innovation Fund is to support partnerships that develop or implement innovative and high-impact programs aimed at producing positive outcomes for students. Additionally, the state intends to use the Innovation Fund to determine best practices in innovative programming related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), which is the chosen curriculum for the Smyrna …

About 360 poppy-wearing patriots honored America’s men and women in the Armed Forces Friday at a Veterans Day Ceremony at Smyrna’s Brinkley Park. The Smyrna Veterans Committee, a coordinating body sponsored by the City of Smyrna, American Legion Post 160, the Veterans Memorial Association of Smyrna, and the Smyrna Rotary Club, organizes the ceremony each Veterans Day. “I’m so happy and so proud to see all of you here - you patriots,” said Joseph “Doc” Masterson Sr., Retired Col. Certainly no one will suffer from a candy and goody shortage this weekend, as Fall festivals and such abound everywhere in Smyrna-Vinings.
On Saturday, The American Legion Post 160 will be holding its inaugural Family Fall Festival. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., activities galore will beckon: costume contest, face painting, ring toss, duck pond, coloring, hula hoops and sticker books. Parents will also be interested in the artist exhibits, arts and crafts booths, handcrafted jewelry, merchant booths and Legion family info booth. At the Tuesday event in Smyrna, there will be an hour-long PowerPoint program featuring World War II Pacific Fleet, Fast Carrier Task Force Operations.
To commemorate September World War II events, American LegionSmyrna Post 160 in Smyrna and the Atlanta Metropolitan Council Navy League have teamed up to produce a Member-Guest social on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Festivities kick off at 6 p.m. with a No-Host Social Hour, followed at 7 p.m. by a generous turkey dinner. Ray Williams is the special guest speaker and will present an hour-long PowerPoint program featuring Pacific Fleet, Fast Carrier Task Force Operations. While I have to admit that I have not attended the American Legion ceremony previously, I felt that the event was inspirational to all that were present. Just listening to the accomplishments of Joseph “Doc” Masterson Sr. should inspire everyone. Great job.   more ›
