I think it shows that our staff and or the consultant advisers they hired know whats best by putting off the landscaping in this drought and heat. The survivability goes way up in fall and winter and the cost for trees is typically 10-20% less if installed in the dormant season. I cant wait to see the new look with trees.   more ›

I hope that the Concord Road median will be one with trees and U-turn zones, etc, with some parking areas and not just a standard arterial with a thin brick median to shuttle people through the center of Smyrna versus showcase it. This is part of the "Main Street" of Smyrna in a sense, and needs to be a real showcase of Smyrna. We shouldn't limit "Main street" type development to Market Village.   more ›

POLL: What Are Your Thoughts on the Atlanta Road Medians?

The Livable Centers Initiative Atlanta Road Median Project was designed to make the corridor safer for pedestrians, but some think the medians make the road more dangerous for drivers.

Construction continues on the Atlanta Road corridor between Fleming Street and Spring Road/Concord Road as contractors work to complete the Livable Centers Atlanta Road Median Project. Smyrna’s Public Works Department reported June 1 that the project is about 50 percent complete. But some Smyrna residents have raised concerns that the medians make Atlanta Road less safe for drivers.  At a recent Ward 3 roundtable meeting, Council Representative Teri Anulewicz said the medians were designed to make the corridor safer for pedestrians. When the project is complete, the medians will be landscaped because a LCI study found that drivers slow down on landscaped corridors, she said. At the meeting, Karen Douglas said the medians have made it …

I do think medians are a waste of tax dollars and they make things worse rather than better; however, I love the huge sidewalks. Why can't we have more sidewalks in the old neighborhoods so I can ride my bicycle out to Atlanta Road without worrying about getting hit by a car in my neighborhood? I realize it would be expensive and difficult because the old roads are narrow and the city would have …   more ›

Teri Anulewicz: Construction Projects Making Smyrna Safer for Pedestrians

The Ward 3 Council Representative said the Atlanta Road median and the Spring Road pedestrian bridge are designed to make Smyrna a more walkable community.

Ward 3 Council Representative Teri Anulewicz answered questions and discussed concerns about the Atlanta Road median project and other Smyrna traffic issues at her Fifth Monday Roundtable at the Smyrna Public Library. Anuelwicz said that many of the city’s construction projects are designed to make Smyrna more pedestrian friendly including the Atlanta Road median project and the Spring Road pedestrian bridge. “We moved (to Smyrna) because we liked living in Cobb County, but we also liked the walkability we had in Virginia Highlands,” Anulewicz said. “When you think of OTP suburbs, I think we’re the most walkable one. I really do.” Anulewicz said that the Livable Centers Initiative Study conducted in 2002 found that Atlanta Road would …

A pedestrian-friendly town is only as friendly when drivers yield to the pedestrian. Drivers are in such a hurry turning from Concord Road onto Atlanta Road, they are not focused on a pedestrian who is trying to cross the road. I have witnessed this first hand, and it is very frightening. I think a sign "No Turn on Right" at this corner should be considered.   more ›

Ward 4 Councilman Talks Concord Road, Atlanta Road at Meeting

About 20 people attended the Ward 4 town hall meeting Thursday.

Charles “Corkey” Welch, Councilman for Ward 4 in Smyrna, held what he hopes to be the first of many town hall meetings for people of his ward on Thursday night at City Hall. Around 20 people attended, airing some of their concerns, as well as hearing Welch’s report on some often discussed projects. Welch opened the town hall by commenting on the 2013 budget. He said he had just recently seen the progress on the new budget and that he is looking forward to reviewing it further.  “From what I’ve seen so far we are in good shape as far as the city goes compared to many of our surrounding communities.”  One project on the minds of many in Smyrna, especially Ward 4, is the Concord Road widening project, which was discussed at length. “That is …

D. Manson, I started my post with "it occurs to me" and I used the word "likely". So I was certainly not suggesting that my opinion on this matter was anything close to a fact. The fact is more likely most people just don't care. Why do you feel the need to dissect my post instead of simply stating your own opinion as I did?   more ›
